What is an Art Masterpiece?
We all recognize an art masterpiece when we see one, but what defines an average work of art from one that will be revered hundreds of years from now? The beauty of Van Gogh's Starry, Starry Night is unmistakably a classic work of art. Vermeer's Girl with the Pearl Earring is rich with mystery, leading us to ask questions like, "Who was this woman?" or "What was she thinking?" Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel inspires us. All three works possess exceptional beauty, and the fact that they were masterfully created is undeniable.
Next time you see a piece of art, put it to the test by asking the following questions:
1) Does it tell a story and invite us to listen?
2) Is it an interesting and well planned composition, with considerations for color, technique, line, form and perspective?
3) Is it inspiring, mysterious, playful, joyful or dynamic in some other way?

Crayons/Colored Pencils
Step 1 - Begin by coloring the face with your crayons/colored pencils. Notice that the face is painted with light brown, orange and yellow.
Step 2 - Quickly add a few dashes of green to his jacket. Notice how the white of the paper is showing through in many places.
Step 3 - Color the hair with crayon/pencil strokes that go in the same direction as his hair falls on his head.
Step 4 - Add the background. Notice how the background is a mixture of yellow, orange and brown.
Watercolor Painting
Step 1 - Begin by transferring the coloring page image to 140lb watercolor paper. An easy way to do this is to place the coloring page behind the watercolor paper and hold it on the window as you trace the lines. The window makes a natural lightbox.
Step 2 - Paint the face. Notice that the face is painted with light brown, orange and yellow.
Step 3 - Quickly add a few dashes of green to his jacket. Notice how the white of the paper is showing through in many places throughout the jacket. Using a dry brush technique will work well.
Step 4 - Define the features with bold strokes of dark brown. You can achieve different thicknesses of line by painting with the tip of the brush with varying pressure. Add the hair with the same color of paint. Remember that your brush strokes should go in the same direction as his hair falls on his head.
Step 5 - Add a background. Notice how the background is a mixture of yellow, orange and brown. If you are painting with watercolor, paint the whole background with yellow. Before the yellow dries, add some orange, overlapping the colors slightly. Before the orange dries, add some brown. The colors will blend right on the paper.
Congratulations!
