Picking a Name for Your Baby

Finding My Baby's Name

Shasta Hartman
When my husband and I first found out we were going to have a baby, the first thing that went through my mind was to start looking for names. We had not decided if we were going to find out the gender of said baby, and I was already searching online, looking through all the baby-naming websites and flipping through naming books when we stopped by the local bookstore.

I was not entirely sure what my husband had in mind, but I wanted something different, but not to the point where my child would be ridiculed for life. Just check my name. Those of you who grew up in the eighties probably remember the Shasta drinks, so you have an idea of the variations of taunting I experienced. Needless to say, soda names and any other names of the sort were never considered for the name of my baby.

We also watched a lot of movies for ideas to help with the baby name search. I must tell you, even though I share a name with a soda, my name came from a movie, so I figured it was a good place to start.

My husband and I kept coming back to DragonHeart. We both enjoyed the movie, but the name we liked was that of the dragon, Draco. It is a cool name, but this was before I had seen or read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and I was aware of a character from the books with the same name. At the time, the last thing I wanted was for my son to share a name with a character from the Harry Potter universe. So, we continued to search for a baby name.

Soon after, we found DragonHeart II: A New Beginning and watched it. After seeing this movie several times, we fell in love with the dragon character in this sequel, whose name is Drake. Once we found out we were having a boy, the decision of our baby's name was easy!
