Scam Mail Sent to College Students with a "Final Notice"

Ryan Kopf
It been reported before, but it looks like direct marketers are still trying to work their evil on college students. I've reported on these bulk mail scams in the past, often they do a lot more to try to get people to open them. This time, it's an almost innocently looking letter, suspiciously at first made me think I had a package at the front desk waiting: nope. Here's what it says:

PICKUP NOTICE

PO BOX 2349

San Marcos, TX 78667

The back says: Pickup Notice: Choose your gift, final notice, and a phone number 1-800-444-7555. Apparently, it's not at all about the free 8Day/7Night condo stay, apple ipod shuffle, or $50 visa gift card. Instead, it's really an invitation to a meeting, where they try to get you to buy stuff. "Everyone who attends the meeting gets a free gift", they claim, while talking about the big prizes above. But first, they try to get you to join their $1000 per year club, and with membership you can... buy more stuff (junk).

In the end, it's highly likely that you'd leave that 45 minute meeting with a free pen rather than a cruise or IPOD. You might even leave a little poorer, and just as unintelligent as when you went. Bottom line: shred this piece of mail now, or better yet: recycle it.

Companies like these are purely scams. They offer nothing you can't get elsewhere better, and they don't give out the prizes that you've 'won'.
