Picky Eaters Are Not Born, They Are Created

Picky eaters are not born that way. We, as parents, teach them to be picky. It is not that we set out with that goal in mind, but our actions show the problem as we have generations of picky eaters. So why not raise our children who have a wide pallet of flavors to chose from. Here are some tested methods.

Begin the process as soon as children begin to eat. Although it is quick and easy to pick up some baby food at the store, it may not be what is best for the child. So mix is up with some home made items that introduce flavors and textures. Too many times parents find the three things they liked the very first time and just keeping giving them those items.

Often times children are fed very bland foods. Pediatricians know have told us they can tolerate and enjoy many more flavors than previously thought. So feel free to expand the kinds and flavors of food. This will lessen the chance of creating a picky eater.

What is required? A good blender and a little imagination. Don't worry if imagination is the issue, there will be many ideas here that can be used and spark the creativity.

The solution is quite simple. Supplement the store purchased food with home made items and add flavorful spices to rather bland foods. Never give up on a food on the first try. Exposure is more than half the battle. Monday it may be "yucky" and Friday it may be a favorite.

How can a parent decide what food choices to make. Think healthy, flavorful and items that the entire family may be eating already. Don't be afraid to try flavors even if they are not a personal favorite.

Curry Peas
Take a bag of frozen peas cook and drain them. Add 1/3 cup of plain yogurt and 1/4 teaspoon of curry powder. Give it a whirl in the blender and add some spice to the life of a child.

Papaya
It is a great fruit and very flavorful. First let's give it a try in a mashed and rather plain form and then maybe as a part of a dinner. Peel the fruit and remove the seeds. Steam it to make a little softer. Puree it and serve it up.

How about some chicken, papaya and brown rice? It is good. Take 1/2 cup of brown rice and cook it in 2 cups of boiling water. Make it tender, but leave it soupy. Boil a chicken breast and chop it into small pieces. Add it to the rice. Add 1/4 cup papaya and simmer for about 10 minutes. Cool it. Puree it and serve it warm.

Apples and Cabbage have great color and interesting flavor. Simply peel and grate one Golden Delicious apple, add 1 cup finely shredded red cabbage, 2 tablespoons of golden raisins, 1/4 cup of water and bring it all to a boil. Cover and simmer about ten minutes and then puree.

Does it have to be an every day event? No. But it is a great choice to have a little fun and give your child good, fun, interesting choices.

Excellent tips. My kids are kind of on an opposite pole - the more they have something the less they like it. Many things they liked at a younger age, they don't like anymore. My husband and I are picky eaters each in our own way and this is very evident in our kids. They have tastes from both of us. :-)
