Picture Book Series to Give Your Young Child This Christmas

Emily Harmon
As a school librarian I have come to find out that one of the very best ways to get a child hooked on reading is to get him hooked on a book series. Once children find a book series they really love, they cannot get enough of the titles. Starting children young, when they are still reading picture books, is a wonderful way to instill a love of reading. If your child gets hooked on a picture book series, she will be all the more ready to find a great chapter book series when the time comes. Here are this librarian's top picture book series to give your child this Christmas.

Fly Guy. The Fly Guy series by Tedd Arnold is a wonderful book series for any young child. Fly Guy books are adorable and hilarious and very easy to read, with large bold print and simple words. The young students in my library can't get enough of Fly Guy. Get your child hooked on a book series this Christmas by giving the picture book series, Fly Guy.

Bad Kitty. The Bad Kitty series by Nick Bruel is sort of a transition series from picture books to chapter books. While Bad Kitty books are technically chapter books, because they are broken down into chapters, they feature many illustrations and read much like a picture book because of the simple wording. Your child will love the hilarious adventures of Bad Kitty and this picture book series is sure to get your child hooked on reading this Christmas.

Max Spaniel. A relatively new picture book series by David Catrow, Max Spaniel is a humorous and cute dog that gets himself into all sorts of adventures. A series that will appeal to both boys and girls, Max Spaniel books are easy reader books that don't read in the choppy way that so many easy readers do. Full of imagination, Max Spaniel is a great picture book series to start your young child on this Christmas.

Sure there are plenty of classic picture book series out there like The Berenstain Bears, Arthur, Clifford, and Amelia Bedelia. Those classic picture book series certainly make great Christmas gifts as well. But if you are trying to help your child really learn to love reading, branch out from the typical and try introducing these new and exciting picture book series this Christmas. Your may help produce a child that is hooked on reading for life.

I agree. Getting children involved in a book series keeps them reading. Great suggestions. :-)
