John S. and James L. Knight Masterworks Season, Sanford and Dolores Ziff Classical Music Series 2010-2011 season kicks off with a one night only performance by the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra conducted by world renowned director Maestro Pavel Kogan and featuring Jennifer Koh of Ravel's arrangement of Mussorgsky's brilliant 'Pictures At An Exhibition.' The performance also includes Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1 in g minor performed by Koh and Tchaikovsky's fantasy for orchestra, Capriccio Italieno.

For those who are not familiar with this violin virtuoso, Jennifer Koh is a Grammy-nominated American and winner of 1994's Tchaikovsky Competition. She has performed as a guest soloist with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Helsinki and Czech Philharmonics, and the Moscow Radio Symphony. She is also a chamber musician and recitalist, performing with Jaime Laredo and Leon Fleisher.

The Moscow State Symphony Orchestra (MSSO) currently in its 67^th season is rich with cultural Russian tradition. Pavel Kogan became the musical director and Chief Conductor in 1989. Under his leadership the orchestra has expanded beyond the classics of Russian and Western symphonic works and has included contemporary compositions from Russia and abroad. Under Maestro Kogan the MSSO has toured extensively throughout the world visiting over 50 countries and performing in concert halls in Europe, North America, Australia and Asia.

As a child Kogan performed alongside his parents, legendary Russian violinists Leonid Kogan and Elizaveta Gilels. He continued studying violin at the Moscow Conservatory with Yuri Yankelevich and conducting with Ilya Musin and Leo Ginzburg. At the young age of 17, he won his first Gold Medal and First Prize at the Sibelius International Violin Competition in Helsinki. He made his first conducting debut at age 22 with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra (now St. Petersburg).

Mussorgsky's 'Pictures At An Exhibition,' (arranged by Maurice Ravel in 1922) is most notably his most famous work. Originally written as a piano score, (Mussorgsky never orchestrated the piece) it was edited by Rimsky and has been orchestrated by more than thirty different composers; Ravel's version has been the single arrangement that has stayed as an audience favorite.

This season the Sanford and Dolores Ziff Classical Music Series has expanded from four to five concerts; igniting the stage of the Adrienne Arsht Center's Knight Concert Hall. Upcoming performances include: Joshua Bell on January 18; Chamber Orchestra Kremlin on February 2; Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie, celebrating 90 years, on February 9. The series closes with a chamber music program featuring Yuri Bashmet and Evgeny Kissin in concert on April 21.
