Summertime in Maine is special. It is the big payoff to the rest of the year. Even in June there are still reminders of winter in June when the temperatures ease down at night. So, by the time July rolls around people are ready to shed the wool and celebrate. Mainers bring in the summer with lemonade stands, trips to the beach, blueberry pie, rhubarb dishes and all that says summer to the hardy folks who weathered the winter.
The state government has the most comprehensive web site for firework displays at http://www.maine.gov/dps/fmo/FireWorksShows.htm. The beauty of this listing is that it goes all the way through the summer, so if you are looking for a display in late July or even into August, then this is the web site that you would like to display to find firework displays in Maine.
Portland's city fireworks will be at 9:30 p.m. on July 4 on the Eastern Promenade. You can watch the display from Portland, from the water or plan ahead and take the ferry, Casco Bay Ferry lines, to Peaks Island and join in the celebration. You may find the island option to be cooler, less crowded and add a bit of variety to your 4th of July tradition.
After the Portland firework display, if you are on Peaks Island, step into the ice cream store for either a soft serve cone or great hand-scooped ice cream, the complement to a perfect 4th of July.
