When my grade school friend told me about Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School, where her daughter used to attend, she explained how involved she was with their community. Located at 4300 North Winchester, in Chicago's Wrigleyville neighborhood, she still volunteered there, long after her daughter moved on to another school. Although she is unable to commit to as many hours as she used to, she still helps out whenever she can. On a couple of occasions, she asked for my help in assisting with the auction committee. I was not a member of the school community, but I was still happy to help. I found the other volunteers and staff to be so welcoming and friendly, that it was a pleasure to work with them.

My contribution to the auction committee was to ask merchants for donations for the event. I went to local businesses to ask for items that could be auctioned off for the event. Most of the merchants were so gracious and generous and were happy to donate to Pilgrim because of it's outstanding reputation in the community. Many of the retailers offered gift certificates, gift baskets and tickets to events. I was pleasantly surprised when one restaurant even offered a $100 gift certificate for dinner.

If you want to learn how you can sign up to volunteer, call the school at 773-477-4824, or fill out a volunteer form on their website.
