About Pillsbury Milk Chocolate Frosting
Long gone are the days when you have to whip up your own frosting if you want to put icing on your cake. Over the years, many companies have sold variations of chocolate frosting. But according to my taste-testing standards, the best one I have tried is Pillsbury's milk chocolate frosting. Some people like a dominant chocolate flavor in their frosting. Personally, I enjoy chocolate frosting, but I don't like a chocolate flavor so overwhelming that it steals the flavor of the cake itself.
Milk chocolate should have a milder chocolate flavor, and this product does. Milk chocolate is also usually sweeter than some of the other chocolate varieties available. Pillsbury milk chocolate frosting is sweet but, again, the flavor does not dominate the taste of the cake, it only seems to enhance the cake's taste.
The one issue I have experienced in the past with Pillsbury milk chocolate frosting is that it can be a bit difficult to spread on a cake without the very top layer of the cake (it's "skin") peeling off. This may be due to a variety of factors, including not allowing the cake enough time to cool. Though, even hours after the cake has cooled, I sometimes find it fairly difficult to spread without some peeling of the cake's surface.
The directions on the Pillsbury milk chocolate frosting label advises to use the frosting at room temperature "for easy spreading." I also suggest that it is best to whip the frosting well with a fork while it is still in the can to make it easier to spread. After heavy whippings, I have found the frosting far easier to spread than when I have not whipped it well.
Pillsbury Milk Chocolate Frosting: The Food Label
Pillsbury milk chocolate frosting is not going to make your cake any healthier, but it will make it taste sweeter, moister, and more dynamic. And, in my opinion, these qualities are worth the extra calories and fat. While we all expect fat, calories, sugar, and a bit of sodium, one thing to be aware of is that this frosting contains 2 grams of trans fat (something a lot of manufacturers have been eliminating from their products for health reasons).
Here are the numbers for a 2-tablespoon (35-gram) serving of Pillsbury milk chocolate frosting, served in 13-serving cans:
140 calories
50 calories from fat
6 grams of total fat
1.5 grams of saturated fat
2 grams of trans fat
0 mg of cholesterol
55 mg of sodium
21 grams of total carbohydrates
Less than 1 gram of dietary fiber
19 grams of sugar
0 grams of protein
Clearly, "moderate" enjoyment of Pillsbury milk chocolate frosting is best - as with any similar product.
Buying Pillsbury Milk Chocolate Frosting
Pillsbury milk chocolate frosting can be found alongside your favorite cake mixes in the sugars/spices/baking aisle. Prices range around $2, more or less. Be on the lookout for special coupon offers, as it is common to find a reduced price for a can of Pillsbury frosting if you buy it with a box of Pillsbury cake mix. To make the cake easier to frost place the cake in the refrigerator for one hour. Brush off loose pieces of cake and the frosting will go on much smoother.
