Pine Scent for Your Artificial Christmas Tree

Diane Cross
The strongest memories we have are that of scent. How many of us the smell of grandma's cookies with a the pleasant feeling of comfort, security and warmth. When one talks of the Yuletide Holidays, one cannot help but associate the Christmas tree with the scent of fresh pine. These days however, cutting the trees only to use it for a season is admittedly not an environmentally responsible act. Thus, the trend these days is for families to purchase artificial trees instead. Of course, there is nothing as real and "Christmassy" as the scent of a pine tree. Yet, there are things you can do to make your artificial tree smell the same (or almost the same) as that of a real pine tree.

- Several sites in the internet and some specialized stores sell pine fragrance oil. This can be applied to the faux leaves on your tree or you can make a potpourri of of Christmas faux flowers, candles and ribbons with the scent of pine fragrance oil. This oil may be considered costly for some because it's about 2-2.50 dollars an ounce. Still, it is worth is because you get the real and safe smell of pine (unless you are allergic to pine anyway). We'd have to present this as the best option because what you smell is the same if you had an authentic pine tree. Of course, you would probably need more than an ounce if you want your tree to smell like pine throughout the whole season.

- Picking up pine leaves and inserting these in between your "faux" tree. This may be the frugal alternative to purchasing pine oil but it isn't as effective, though you do have the scent. You also have the disadvantage of having to change and find more fresh leaves every time the scent seems to fade. It's an "ok" alternative (and most people who have artificial trees do this, but it can be rather messy.

- Artificial pine scent sprays ate also available. Most of these scents are available online called Scentopine. We've tried this and it seems alright if one simply wishes to have a whiff of pine scent. It isn't however a hundred percent real pine scent and some people, particularly the kids, may have an allergic reaction to this scent. There is also a natural absorbing gel that's called Holiday Pine Scent. It works fine for some, but again it doesn't really come from real pine oil.

- My favorite pine scent for a tree is that from aromatic candles that are made with pine essential oil. The candles can be placed somewhere safe near the tree and you can light the candles every time you miss the scent of pine. It makes the Christmas setting relaxing and the candles can be a lovely part of your whole Christmas home design. It is such an awesome feeling to have the pleasant of seeing the tree and those beautiful candles at the same time.

- Buy the new pine hair air sprays. Again they're not real pine oil scent but they have captured the pine scent. For instance, Febreze from Procter and Gamble have "holiday" sprays that smell like pine. The spray is called Fresh Evergreen and Snow and some say that it's a good alternative to the scent of real pine. Advantages of this spray is that you can spray everything around you -- including your home carpet - with pine scent. It is also easier and more practical to apply and it goes well with scented pine candles too. Disadvantage may be that one may be allergic to it, though this seems rare.

Christmas seems not to be Christmas without that familiar scent of pine we used to recall from those merry Yuletides of our childhood. Yet, it is possible to have the same Christmas experience today. We can put the scent and memories back into our beautiful and picturesque artificial Christmas tree.
