As the owner of a Cocker Spaniel with allergies to beef and chicken, I was in search of an all natural dog food alternative. Pinnacle brand Trout & Sweet Potato, made by Breeder's Choice Co., is the one I have chosen for my dog.
Packaging
The Breeder's Choice Co. invest a lot of money in their packaging to ensure freshness and quality. All dog food is sealed in a 98% oxygen tight bag, meaning that very little oxygen can enter the bag. May not seem important, but oxygen actually helps to break down dog food, so an airtight bag means fresher dog food.
Pinnacle dog food has a shelf life of only 90 days after the airtight seal has been broken.
The photos on the front of the Pinnacle dog food bag are truly beautiful to look at. This is a dog food that you don't need to hide in the hall closet.
Benefits
Pinnacle holistic dog food provides essential oils and fatty acids from trout, herring meal, canola oil, and grapeseed. Feeding your dog a natural diet with no fillers helps to ensure a healthier coat.
My Cocker Spaniel had flaky, itchy, dry skin before I switched to Pinnacle Trout & Sweet Potato formula dog food. As a black Cocker Spaniel, his skin problems were quite evident. After eating Pinnacle Trout & Sweet Potato dog food for a month my dog's coat was thicker and softer.
Feeding instructions and costs
The general rule of thumb here is; the better the dog food, the higher the price, the less food is fed. So in essence, you will spend as much (and possibly less) on a higher quality dog food.
The initial price per bag may be more expensive, but you will be more likely to stick to the feeding guide lines which will be far lower than a grocery store brand dog food. Your dog will be filled up with less food and stay full longer since Pinnacle is made with real food.
Feeding instructions are clearly laid out on every bag, and it is important that you stick to them to prevent obesity in your dog.
To give you some idea; a 50-60 pound dog should be fed a total of 2½-2¾ cups of Pinnacle holistic dog food per day. Many grocery store brand dog foods recommend feeding the same size dog 3-5 cups per day. This is because the cheaper dog food brands use fillers that pass quickly through your dog without providing any nutrients.
Pinnacle Holistic brand dog food is available in the following blends:
Trout & Sweet Potato (dry/canned), Chicken & Oats (dry/canned), Duck & Potato (dry/canned), and Peak Protein (dry only).
You will not find Pinnacle Holistic brand dog food at your local grocery store. Dog specialty shops are the place to find Pinnacle, or ask your veterinarian.
The Breeder's Choice Co. offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee, and offers its toll-free number on every bag.

Post a CommentTo clarify, he is now an 801b dog, before he wasn't quite 751bs and was overly skinny.
I've been using Pinnacle Trout and Sweet Potato for about nine months due to my dog's allergies. It does cost more up front but the price per bowl is equivalent if not better. From my experience, I was feeding my dog almost 8 cups a day (80lb dog) and he was always hungry but wouldn't gain weight. When I discovered that food allergies were the issue I switched his food to Pinnacle and now feed him 3 cups per day and he has put on 5 healthy pounds. I don't like the fact that the bag won't close, but the quality is fantastic. I definitely recommend it.
good review! i would have liked to see the ingredient list but still very informative!
Mrs. Mefford, I agree completely about not being able to close the bag good enough! I wound up using an X-large 'chip clip', but it is something that the makers of Pinnacle will have to look into. I only purchase the small bag, and now I empty the dog food into an airtight container for storage. It is a shame they put so much into package looks and not functionality. It is still the best dog food my dog has been on!
I feed my dog Gizmo the trout and sweet potato.. Your bags seem strong enough but there is no way to keep the food fresh once the bag is opened. No zip lock with a slider or a large enough clip to hold the bag shut .
Your comments would be appreciated. Thank you Mrs Mefford
Very informative article.
good to know!!
Excellent artivle and I totally second what Greg said. He pretty summed up what I would say but he did a much better job of it.
sounds good
You are right, you pay more for better quality up front, but the cost per serving is really what you need to look at. As you said, you end up feeding less because the food is processed better by that animal so they get more nutrition out of smaller amounts. Great review!
