Piranha 3D Movie Review

Blood, Guts, Nudity, and Over-the-top Mayhem is Surprisingly Entertaining...

J G Hodnette
Like any rational person, hearing the description of the film Piranha 3D, I thought "ah, another ridiculous new movie with no plot that will soon be forgotten." But as is the nature of life, I was in for a surprise. After its release, this film has received soaring ratings because of its wildly entertaining nature. Let's see what makes this film worth seeing.

Plot

Basically, prehistoric piranha that should never logically exist suddenly have made their way into a lake that is being invaded because of Spring Break by a bunch of naked and drunken college students who won't give up their vacation time no matter what the police say about "their safety." The setup gives us reason to not care at all when soon afterward these people start to be eaten up in viciously gory detail by the piranha in question.

What makes this film so great in part is the time spent on the gory special effects. This film doesn't hold back at all and the technology is good enough now that you can practically feel it. The action of the story continues to progress as we are introduced to porn directors, many many topless girls, cocaine, tequila body shots, and of course much more bloody and gore.

What's so great about it?

The film's 3D is perfectly done to give you the full experience of as much madness as you can handle. This film is basically what everyone thought Snakes on a Plane was going to be--crazy animals, bloody action, and walking away from the theater feeling like you paid to see something that you'll be laughing about with your friends for weeks to come. This film appreciates what it is and doesn't try to be anything else. That shows a respect for the audience that is refreshing to see. There is no attempt to weave in some emotional sub-plots. This movie is a no brainer and proud to be so.

Conclusion

I can't claim that this film is the type of thing that you will ponder over like Inception or admire like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but if you want a movie experience that is 100% about fun and nothing else, then this is the film for you. Reviewers vary greatly on this film from scores of about 6 to 9/10 for hilarious gory action.
