Piranha 3d Movie Review Ratings Have Early Bite

Robert Dougherty
Piranha 3d movie review scores are a bit surprising early on. Any Piranha 3d movie review expectations were probably low, but early reviews are actually fresh. Since this is the ultimate example of a gory, trashy horror film, and in 3-D at that, it is usually a recipe for disaster with critics. But this franchise has a unique place in movie history already, and it is using the format in more revealing ways than usual. As such, the first batch of Piranha 3d movie review articles praise the film for being gruesome, tongue-in-cheek fun.

The setup is simple, as ancient, bloodthirsty piranhas escape after an earthquake, and prepare to feast on thousands of mostly naked teenagers on spring break. Normally, this might be a setup for a SyFy Saturday night film, but this one is the third installment of an ancient franchise.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the Piranha 3d movie review ratings are actually fairly fresh. No consensus has been posted yet, and the score may go down once regular critics weigh in. But, for now, the film is at 81 percent positive, with a 6.4 average rating.

The positive Piranha 3d movie review articles reacted with glee at the bloody, campy action and attacks. What's more, it is a rare live-action film praised for having 3-D, especially since this may be the first 3-D film with nudity. Horror franchises like Final Destination have dabbled in the format before, and Saw will do the same in October. Yet this may be labeled as the best horror 3-D movie.

That kind of honor would be one more twist for this uniquely historic series. When the original was released in 1978, it was an early break for Gremlins director Joe Dante. Then, when the sequel came out, it became best known as James Cameron's directorial debut. The Piranha 3d movie review rulings don't judge director Alexandre Aja as the next Cameron or Dante - but it would take years to be sure.

For the immediate future, it appears the Piranha fans are being rewarded for their long wait. Even though the summer season is in the final stages, with an unintimidating slate of films wrapping things up, this movie is still set to munch on summer leftovers.

Despite these positive Piranha 3d movie review scores early on, the franchise's fanbase and the 3-D prices might not help it make much money. Yet it may be set to take its place in the Piranha legacy, and be embraced by the series' cult audience.
