Piranha 3D Sequel in the Works

Coming out of the office of Dimension Films in New York City, the words "sequel" and "Piranha 3D" were used in the same sentence. As in, "DIMENSION FILMS ANNOUNCES THAT PIRANHA 3D - THE SEQUEL IS IN THE WORKS."

Apparently a $10 million opening weekend is grounds to start green-lighting sequels these days. Sure the critics are on board with this, as favorable reviews are plentiful. Word-of-mouth seems to be solid based on comment and message boards. Plus, the viral video, "For Your Consideration" released on Funny Or Die has reached over 35 million views. Finally, Piranha 3D had a small production budget of $24 million.

Let's be honest here. Dimension has sent out this press release to entice people to hit the theaters. If this obvious ploy backfires, there will be no sequel. Hence the, "In the works", stated below. One has to admire the tactics, but this flick is ways away from making a profit at the theater. Dimension clearly realizes this after a mediocre opening, but credit is given for their intelligence to keep this media buzz alive to squeeze every dollar out of the public.

By the way, I was one of the critics that thoroughly enjoyed the flick. Just don't try to play mind games with the fans Dimension. Good news is the turn-around time for the sequel should be quick. Anyone could write a 13 page script for this (my guess is the current release was 11 pages in length).
