Pistachio Recall List Available at FDA.gov Site

Searchable Product List Forthcoming and High-tech Ways to Keep Tabs on the Pistachio and Other Recalls

The 2009 massive PCA peanut butter recall is barely out of the news when a new nut recall connected to salmonella emerges to grab the nation's attention. According to the FDA.gov site, pistachios traced back to Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. are now subject to recall. Though there are no confirmed cases of salmonella poisoning, both the FDA and Setton Pistachio are urging consumers to avoid consuming products listing pistachios in the ingredient list. The FDA recognizes that consumers are hungry for information regarding products that may contain suspect pistachios, so they have launched a dedicated page geared toward pistachio recall lists and other pertinent information. The FDA will provide a searchable list of recalled pistachio products at http://www.fda.gov/pistachios/ and will regularly update information for consumers as more information about the pistachio recall becomes available.

Pistachio recall information made easy via FDA.gov site and applications

Aside from the promised searchable pistachio recall list that the FDA will provide on the FDA.gov site, tech savvy consumers can get their pistachio recall information a variety of other ways.

RSS: Consumers can sign up for the FDA.gov's recall RSS feed and receive pistachio recall updates via RSS. The RSS feed will include other recalls unrelated to the pistachio recall; however, it should be noted that the now infamous PCA peanut butter recall has yet to completely die down. Earlier this week, Wright Popcorn & Nut Company issued a recall related to PCA's tainted peanuts.

Email: Concerned consumers can also receive the FDA recall notices via email by signing up via the email link on the http://www.fda.gov/pistachios/ web page.

Twitter: The FDA is reaching out to Americans hooked on Twitter tweets at http://twitter.com/fdarecalls where Twitter users can follow the FDA.gov recall notices on their computer or mobile phone.

Non-techies can also obtain information on the pistachio recall or other recalls via the FDA's toll free number, 1-888-SAFEFOOD.

Short list of recalled pistachio products

As of this date, the pistachio recall list is fairly small. That the FDA plans to institute a searchable pistachio product recall list could mean that the FDA expects the pistachio recall to be extensive and perhaps far reaching, like the PCA peanut butter recall continues to be. Currently, according to the FDA.gov site, Kroger has recalled its Private Selection Shelled Pistachios sold in 10-ounce containers and Back to Nature's Nantucket Trail Mix has been recalled in its 10 and 28 oz bags, sporting UPCs 59283-00020 and 59283-31039. Georgia Nut Company has recalled certain bulk and retail offerings, which affect consumers in Wisconsin and Illinois, as well as those who may have purchased pistachios via their website. In addition to bulk pistachios sold in tote bags ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 pounds, Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. is also recalling its 9 oz film bags of Setton Farms brand roasted salted shelled pistachios which were distributed in several southern states. Affected consumers may return the potentially salmonella tainted products to the store where they were purchased for a refund.
