'Pit Bulls' the Misunderstood Breed

First off, a Pit Bull is not just one dog. The word Pit Bull is used to describe different types of dogs, that look alike in one way or another . Examples of these breeds are; American Bulldog, Bull Terrier, and American Staffordshire Terrier,, just to name a few. These breeds amongst others share similar physical features and characteristics.

For many years Pit Bull have been bred and raised to be mean and aggressive, to even attack and kill other dogs. Pit Bull were commonly used in dog fighting, which is illegal in the United States. People raise there dogs to be tough and kill another dog. This is what they are taught to do. They are treated mean so they will become mean. They were not born wanting to hurt another animal or even a person, they were trained to do it.

Unfortunately this makes the dog look bad in the eyes of others. The owner or trainer has created an aggressive dog, and the dog gets the bad rap for it. What about how they are treated? How an animal is treated has a huge influence on its attitude and behavior, on how it will react in a situation. Treat a Pit Bull with respect and they will respect you. This goes for any animal.

People are familiar with how misbehaved a Pit Bull can be, but are they familiar with the wondrous things they can do. It is on how they are raised. Pit Bulls really are amazing animals.

During World War 1 the Pit Bull was a highly decorated war hero. There intelligence makes them great for dog sports and competitions, including agility, obedience, schutzhund, and weight pulling. There was also "Pete", the Pit Bull in the movie 'The Little Rascals.' A movie filled with children. Pit Bulls also make a great family pet, and are great with children. You just have to spend time with them. They need exercise, attention, socialization, and most of all your love. in return you and your family will get there love, respect, and undying loyalty.

An American Pit Bull names Bandog Dread, won multiple titles in conformation, competition obedience, Schutzhund, (a dog sport developed in Germany in the eary 1900's, to identify dogs that do or do not have character traits required for demanding jobs such as, police work, and search and rescue), weightpulling, and hearding making him the most titled dog of any breed ever. Popsicle, named after police found him in a freezer during a drug bust, is now famouse for sniffing out drugs for the DEA. The Pit Bull is also the only dog to have ever appeared on the cover of Life Magazine three times.

Jessica Alba, Michael J Fox, Rachael Ray, Alicia Silverstone and Jessica Biel are just a few of the many celebrities who own Pit Bulls.

The Pit Bull is not the one to blame, the people who have neglected and mistreated them are. They have given these wonderful dogs a bad reputation, that they do not deserve.
