Then my Daughter, an Animal Control Officer, rescued a female pit bull from the human society just before its time was up for euthanasia due to the policy of the county to put down dogs not adopted in a given period of time. The dog, an American Pink Nose Pit Bull was about 2 years old and showed signs of being used in a puppy mill for breeding. She was never trained to be a fighting dog and got along well with most other dogs with the exception of small puppies who seemed to scare her and make her want to go in the opposite direction. My Daughter named her Jasmine.
My wife and I at first thought this adoption was a mistake. However, in time we realized the mistake was ours. Jasmine was the most loving dog we ever had and won our hearts over in just a few weeks. She had a ton of personality and unconditional love. She seemed more like a person than a dog. Besides the big hugs we would get each morning when we woke up or when she didn't see us for a few hours or more, she would give us big smiles and tail wags to let us know how happy she was to see us. Jasmine's only wish in the world was to be petted continually and loved unconditionally.
She is friendly with other dogs and people and loves to go to the dog park to see the other dogs from the neighborhood. She is also a major sniffer of the ground for news of other dogs who where there before. She is one of the more sedate dogs in the park and is very comfortable not being an alpha dog.
She rarely barked or growled but one morning she came out with a series of barks scaring away a fox who had been raiding our garbage set out the previous evening for pick up. This was fine for us since we really hated to pick up the scattered garbage debris from a fox's raid during the night.
Jasmine snored due to a deviated septum but she was so funny that my wife and I would crack up whenever she fell asleep while we were watching TV and started snoring. In fact it turned out that that our own relationship improved since watching her would always cause us to crack a mutual smile.
We talk to her all the time and she seems to be the best listener I have ever met. Her communication skills are superior so she lets us know if she needs to go for a walk by pointing at the leash, where she wants to be petted by using her nose or arm to move our hands to the exact area which needs attention.
I love this dog so much that we love to baby sit for her when my Daughter is away or when we just want doggie company. We do not think of her as a Pit Bull, rather she has become our beloved Grand Doggie.

Post a CommentThe concept of dog breeds being bad is a fake one portrayed because people are irresponsible. It's unfortunate. So many people look at me like I'm crazy when I try to tell them pitt bulls are good dogs. I have a Rotty mix, and she is the most loving thing ever. She is so happy to see everyone and everything all the time. I'm glad you put this story out there.
"US" as in the human race :)
Thank you for shedding a positive light on this poor misjudged breed. Pit bulls are loving, smart, and gentle by nature. In fact, it took us many years to breed the mean into them, and it takes just a few generations to breed it out. If these dogs are so vicious, why do they have to be treated so badly to be made to fight? Any dog would be a brute, treated the way they are.
I love pits I had a wonderful one named Max several years ago, he was the most loving and attentive dog I'd ever had. It is so terrible that the way some people raise and train their pits is causing so many people to fall for the hype and stereotype about these dogs. They are just like any dog, they are animals and should always be respected as having the propensity to be dangerous.
I love pit bulls, sometimes people mistake our Lydia for a pit because she has a pitbull face, half boston and half everything else. They are so loving and gentle if not tortured and trained to fight. She is beautiful your Jasmine!
My pitbull (names Peaches) could be a real sweetheart, but she also got in touch with her inner pit bull sometimes, and we got in trouble.
This past Sunday's Parade Magazine had an article about a few of Michaal Vicks dogs that are now being used as therapy dogs. It's nice that a few of the dogs could be saved.
