Pittsburgh Restaurant Guide: Top Sub Shops in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Joyce Carole
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a sandwich town. For those visiting Pittsburgh and looking for the perfect sub shop to stop for a quick lunch you have many options. Here is my list of the three best sub shops in Pittsburgh. Whether you are craving a tasty steak sandwich or wanting to try one of Pittsburgh's original specialty subs there is a sub shop for you in Pittsburgh.

Primanti Brothers

Primanti Brothers has several locations in the Pittsburgh area. There is even a Primanti Brothers at PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates (the sandwiches are much better than the Pirates). My favorite Primanti Brothers is their location in PPG Plaza, which is a great place to sit outside and enjoy a great Pittsburgh sub. What makes Primanti Brothers' subs special is that they use freshly baked Italian bread and load the sandwich with meat, cheese, cole slaw and French fries. This is a real Pittsburgh sandwich and if you have not eaten one before you need to try it. My favorite is the Primanti Brothers hot sausage sandwich.

Peppi's

I still remember the first time I tasted one of Peppi's delicious steak sandwiches. It was over ten years ago and I had just started working in downtown Pittsburgh, my boss took me out to this hole-in-the-wall restaurant located right across the Smithfield Street Bridge in Downtown Pittsburgh. The restaurant was nothing to brag about. There really is no seating, but the steak sandwich was absolutely amazing. For the best steak sandwich that can be had outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania try Peppi's "ultimate" steak sandwich. The prices are low and the sandwiches are big. This is the ultimate satisfying lunch in Pittsburgh.

Sammy's

Sammy's is a great bar and restaurant located in downtown Pittsburgh. Sammy's specialty is their Reuben or Rachel. At Sammy's you can enjoy a beer along with a delicious sandwich in a dimly lit bar like setting. The food is cheap and lunchtime can get crowded, but a Sammy's corn beef sandwich is certainly worth it.

Other Pittsburgh Restaurants with Delicious Sandwiches

If none of the above sub shop options tickle, your fancy head to one of the many Quizno's sub shops located in Pittsburgh or try one of the great tasting sandwiches offered at Squirrel Hill's Gullifty's Restaurant, which offers a wide variety of sandwiches and pizza. Gullifty's is also a great place to stop for a drink.

These are my favorite places to stop in Pittsburgh for a delicious sandwich or sub.
