Pity for Lindsay Lohan Who Got 90 Days in Jail for Violating Parole

Back to the Slammer for the Troubled Starlette, but Should We Scorn or Pity Her?

S Gardner
Well, a judge in Beverly Hills just ordered Lindsay Lohan back to jail. Ninety days this time, for breaching the terms of her 2007 drug charge probation. I suppose this is breaking news. But then again, is it really news at all?

Many young celebrities like Lindsay Lohan seem to find it hard to keep their nose clean. No, that was too kind. They seem to make a point of trying everything they can think of to get it good and dirty.

So in LiLo's case this time, it seems Judge Marsha Revel let the whole warbling alcohol detection ankle bracelet thing go, but just couldn't get past the nine court-ordered alcohol education classes that apparently slipped Ms. Lohan's mind. According to the L.A. Times, Lindsay sniveled, "I have to provide for myself. I have to work. Having said that, I did everything to balance my jobs and showing up."

Okay, now, "I have to provide for myself"? I could pay my mortgage for half the year if I could Ebay one of her purses. And who doesn't have to juggle work, family, rest and little things like court ordered alcohol education classes? At some point a girl does have to learn to prioritize.

I really don't mean to be too hard on Lindsay Lohan or any of the bad boys and girls of Hollywood. In a way, I truly pity them. How many child stars can you name that managed to grow up without getting lost, at least for a time, in a world of drugs or alcohol or horrible, destructive relationships? They're often lucky to even survive that world. Many, in fact, don't. And many, if not most, spend their entire lives pretty messed up and lost.

It isn't just a Hollywood thing, either. Seems it's just human nature. Many of us seem to have a hard time with too much too soon. Think not just of actors and actresses, but of famous musicians, rock stars, authors, athletes - even lottery winners, for heaven's sake. Many of us wish we could be rich and famous, but when too much of that kind of good thing is thrust upon us too quickly, few of us come out unscathed. That's why I would never want to be like that.

Then add to that a dysfunctional family background, like poor Lindsay has clearly had, and you've got the makings of a total disaster. No honestly loving and selfless role models, no compass, no true friends to ground her and slap her up side the head if she's heading down the wrong track. No values, no sense of reality to steady her when all the glitz and glare of celebrity flash at her like a form of sensory torture, and you've got yourself the Lindsay Lohan train wreck. If she's lucky, starting on July 22 when she begins her 90 day jail sentence, she'll take the time to start really sorting through her life and finding a way to get it back on track. I'm just grateful I never had to deal with all that.

So, yes, I do feel badly for Lindsay Lohan. I'm glad I didn't have the athletic ability of a Michael Vick or Tiger Woods. I'm glad I didn't have the vocal ability of Whitney Houston. I'm glad I never won the lottery.

Like most of you, I'm sure, I would never, ever want to have to live like that, with all the money, the travel, the adoring fans, the fame, even if I feel like, maybe, I could have handled it better. So I'm glad I wasn't as adorable or talented as Lindsay Lohan or one of these other celebrities.

But then again ... Maybe I just haven't been discovered yet.
