Pizza Burns: Three Home Remedies to Ease the Pain on the Roof of Your Mouth

Dee Jones
All pizza burns could probably be prevented with a little patience. But the truth is that, sometimes, you just can't wait to bite into a slice of hot, cheesy, delicious-looking pizza. But, bite into a slice of pizza that's too hot, and you could end up paying the price.

A pizza burn can occur when the hot, melted cheese on the top of a slice of pizza hits the top of your mouth. The result can be blisters on the roof of your mouth, pain that lasts for a week or more.

And all because you couldn't wait to taste that pepperoni pizza with extra cheese.

But while this condition is called "pizza burn," you can actually burn your mouth pretty severely if you eat or drink anything that's too hot, from the coffee you drink in the morning, to the sauce you put on your pasts.

If your pizza burn is bad enough, not only could the pain last for several days, it can make eating and drinking pretty difficult.

Fortunately, there are ways to soothe a pizza burn.

Use Ice to Soothe a Pizza Burn

Just as you'd use ice to sooth a burn on your finger, you can use ice to soothe the pizza burns in your mouth. In fact, putting ice in your mouth as soon as you can after the pizza burn occurred can help prevent further damage.

Simply put a piece of ice in your mouth, and use your tongue to press the ice against the areas that were burned.

Later, you can rinse your mouth out with cold water every hour or two, or whenever the pizza burn is really bothering you.

Stay Cool

It could take up to a week for the pizza burns in your mouth to heal. In the meantime, treat yourself to plenty of cool foods and beverages, like iced tea, cold milk, and ice cream. They will help soothe the pizza burns, and make your mouth feel much better.

Avoid Hot and Spicy Foods

While the pizza burns in your mouth are healing, eating certain foods could be painful, or could even cause further damage. So, until your pizza burns are healed, avoid hot foods and drinks, like hot coffee. At dinner, let your food cool considerably before taking a bite.

You should also avoid spicy foods, acidic foods, and foods with sharp edges, like potato chips. These foods can cause further irritation to the pizza burns.

Of course, the best way to deal with a pizza burn is to prevent it. Try waiting at least two minutes before eating hot food. Or try testing the temperature of your food with your finger before you take a bite.

But if you do end up with a pizza burn, these tips will help you find relief.

isn't it more likely that it's the pizza sauce coming through the cheese that burns?
