Pizza Crust Alternatives

Amy Brantley
If there's one thing everyone seems to love, it's pizza. It's a dish that can be prepared in thousands of different ways and is a popular dish for fusion cooking. Pizza also isn't confined to a basic pizza crust. There are hundreds of different crust options. Whether you want to quickly whip up a pizza using items you have around the house or want a pizza for dessert, don't allow yourself to be limited to basic pizza dough. If you're unsure where to start, try out one of the following pizza crust alternatives.

Pita Bread

Pita bread isn't just for sandwiches and chips. It also makes the perfect crust for a quick pizza. One of my favorite ways to use it is to top the bread with some ranch dressing, shredded cheese, chicken breast and buffalo sauce. It's a great way to use up leftover chicken and takes fewer than 15 minutes to prepare and bake. You can even choose pita bread based on the type of pizza you're making. For example, you could use onion flavored for a caramelized onion and blue cheese pizza or whole wheat pita for a healthy vegetable pizza.

English Muffins

This has always been a popular option for creating mini pepperoni pizzas for children. But you can also use English muffins to make a delicious breakfast pizza. Start by brushing a split English muffin with olive oil and top with a couple slices of bacon, scrambled eggs and salsa. Top everything with a big portion of shredded cheddar cheese and bake until the cheese is bubbly and golden and the crust is crispy.

Flat Bread

Many grocery store bakeries are now offering flat bread. This is a wonderful alternative to a basic pizza crust. Not only is it ready to go straight from the package, but it has a neutral flavor as well. You can use flat bread for almost any type of pizza, but you can also have fun with it by creating something new. Instead of using pizza sauce, try spreading the pizza with hummus and topping with crumbled feta and olives.

Cookie Dough

Many pizzerias use thin crusts to make a dessert pizza, but one of the more popular home options is to use cookie dough. Fruit pizzas are often made using sugar cookie dough, but chocolate chip cookie dough is a great base for a candy pizza. You can get as crazy and decadent as you like. Best of all, these are the perfect substitute to a cake for a child's birthday party.

These are creative ideas. I hadn't thought of using pita or crumpets (English muffins) instead as a pizza base.
