We all know that nachos make an excellent appetizer. However, many foods can always be improved upon. For example, instead of tortilla chips, wouldn't nachos be much better when made with fried potato wedges? That was my way of thinking when I discovered Pizza Hut's Nacho Wedges. This appetizer sounded delicious, but would the fried potato wedges add too much grease and leave this appetizer seeming a bit overwhelming?
Pizza Hut's Nacho Wedges start with a bed of deep fried seasoned potato wedges, which are then smothered in nacho cheese, shredded cheese, chopped tomatoes, crisp bacon and jalapeno slices. They sound incredibly decadent, but as we all know, menu descriptions are written by some of the best people in the restaurant business. They are meant to entice, even if the food doesn't live up to the description.
Thankfully, this wasn't one of those cases. This appetizer is amazing. The potato wedges are the perfect alternative to tortilla chips and add to the wonderful contrast of textures and flavors this appetizer offers. The only thing I would change would be to maybe add a topping that had a crisp texture, such as chopped green onions. Sour cream would have also made a nice compliment to the zesty flavors of the jalapeno peppers and nacho cheese.
I would love to tell you how many calories and grams of fat this appetizer has, but Pizza Hut doesn't have it listed on their website. I can however tell you the price, which is $6.99. This seems to be a popular price for appetizers in many restaurants.
I would have to give this appetizer, 4 out of 5 stars. The only reason I knock off one star is that the appetizer seems to have something missing, such as green onions. However, I still highly recommend this appetizer, if you love nachos. The addition of potatoes is such a wonderful concept. Plus, this appetizer is large enough to share with four people, as long as you plan on ordering pizza afterward. If not, you should count on only feeding two people. Of course, these would also make a great side to one of Pizza Hut's delicious sandwiches.
