Places to Find Some Peace and Quiet on a College Campus

Thundercats
Most of the time, college students will have a hard time finding peace and quiet on campus. It is customary for the housing department to put at least one crazy person on every hall, thereby providing a loud, noisy, and obnoxious environment for all to enjoy. Especially if your roommate and you share one room, finding the peace and quiet in order for you to study and concentrate to the best of your ability can prove to be difficult. Everyone's schedule is different, so they day you may have a test, he may be done for the week. In any case, here are 5 spots on campus you are sure to find silence.

Library

This doesn't mean everywhere in the library will be quiet and peaceful. If your library is large (3+ floors), then most likely, the first and second floors will be for "group" activity, meaning the rest of the floors are usually quiet. Usually. Some libraries have up to 9 floors, and I guarantee you that if you go up there, you will find at least 3 people sleeping somewhere. These are the most efficient places to study, as most universities keep their libraries open 24 hours a day during the week. Now that is accommodating! In addition to the space, the library has a plethora of books and resources, internet, and probably a café somewhere for you to buy some snacks.

Random classroom

Pick your favorite building and walk around to see if any of the classrooms are taken. If they aren't, then most likely there will be a couple of people inside studying. Whether it be between classes or after dinner, you can always sit down in the quiet of a classroom and get some work done (granted the building isn't locked). These become public areas once there is no class taking place, but that is the downside of finding a classroom to study in. You won't know who's reserved the class for when. When you see lots of people walking in, it's your time to leave.

Dorm Lounge

Chances are your dormitory building will have a lounge with tables and sofas. Most people don't know about this, so they won't bother you should you decide to study inside. Even so, most of the lounges have a television, making for a rude awakening when a bunch of the guys on your hall want to watch the game. But most likely, they don't know about the lounge. Because you didn't either until you read this article. Now go find it.

Computer lab

If you enjoy the soothing hum of a computer's CPU, then the computer lab is the place for you. Besides the sound of fingers on a keyboard, most people are diligently working on their school work or listening to music while surfing the web. Don't worry - they have headphones. You'll not only have access to the internet right at your fingertips, if you need any help, there will usually be an "information technology" specialist there to help you. They have scheduled hours during which they are required to work in the computer labs. Just like libraries, the computer labs are usually open late to accommodate students. But beware, as it can be tempting to surf the internet and chat with friends if you have a monitor staring right back at you. If you think that you will stray from your school work, then choose another place to study.

Café

In order to make money by price gouging students, there will be many little coffee shops and cafés around campus or close by where there is sure to be tables, chairs, food, and wireless internet (should you need to use a laptop). These are usually quiet places to get a quick snack or look over some last minute bulletins for that next exam. Although a café gives the customer the area to do whatever he or she wants, they will usually force you to buy something, whether it be a cup of milk or a latte, in exchange for using their area. If you wanted one in the first place, then by all means, go for it!

There is salvation from noisiness at various locations on campus. In order to determine the best place for you to study, ask your friends what they do when they need some quiet, and do some research as to which buildings are more accommodating to students who just need a place to study. Don't give yourself excuses not to study, because there WILL be people who find the places they need to concentrate, and you WILL fail. Well, maybe you won't fail, but you'll be disappointed with yourself. Be resourceful - the answer is usually right in front of you.
