If you want to get a fantastic outfit, but don't want to spend a ton of money on something you know you'll only wear once, consider checking out the costume rental places in town.
1.) At the Ritz: Located at 1831 Spring Garden Street, At the Ritz is a small local business tucked between a few other shops, and a fabulous place for renting Halloween (and other) costumes. With a huge selection, lots of accessories, and reasonable prices on amazing products, it's pretty easy to find something you like there. Even if you go in without a clear idea of what you want to dress up as, browsing around the store should help you come up with something you're excited about. And Bob, the proprietor, is so friendly and helpful, he'll make you feel right at home. Even if you already have a costume for Halloween, At the Ritz is definitely worth checking out some time.
2.) Eastern Costume Company is another great Greensboro place for renting costumes. It can be found tucked away on back streets downtown at 224 Commerce Place. While they have a huge selection and are able to tailor costumes for a great fit, they are not as fun to browse as At the Ritz because they keep their costumes back behind the main desk. However, they have various books with pictures of the many different available costumes and if you find one you are interested in, the manager will bring it out for you to try on. They also have another room attached where they sell various costume accessories, so that's worth checking out as well.
If you have something vintage in mind, or something that needs a vintage touch, try a local vintage store.
1.) Wild and Crazy Vintage: Located right by UNCG at the corner of Tate and Lee Street, Wild and Crazy Vintage is a fun little store with a friendly and helpful owner. You can find a variety of vintage clothing there, as well as accessories like shoes, jewelry, long gloves, corsets, and more. You may even be able to find a fun prop or two, because the store does not deal only in clothing and accessories, but also has some interesting knick knacks for sale as well. The prices are reasonable and it's worth going just to see all the fun and kitschy stuff on display!
2.) Design Archives: Another fun vintage store, this one is located at 338 Tate Street, conveniently close to Wild and Crazy Vintage. So if you're going to one, you may as well check out the other too! Design Archives is a fairly large store filled with vintage clothing of all kinds, and a number of vintage accessories as well.
If you're trying to piece together a costume yourself, and would like to do it inexpensively and creatively, try shopping at some of the various thrift stores in Greensboro. For instance, if you are dressing up as a movie or television show character, browsing various thrift stores looking for different pieces of the outfit can be a fun and cheap way to shop.
1.) Salvation Army Store: This store in located at 307 W Lee Street. While they don't generally have the best selection in town, and their store is generally in disarray, they definitely have the best prices in town. All clothing (excepting a few special items) is priced at $2.50 a piece. They also have regular half-off sales, so you can even buy a number of items for just $1.25. Just be aware that they do not have dressing rooms, so be prepared to wear clothes that make it easy for you to try things on over.
2.) Goodwill: There are a number of Goodwills all over town, including: 1235 S Eugene Street, 3921 Battleground Avenue, and 3739-A High Point Road. Like Salvation Army, Goodwill's clothes all have set prices, depending on the type of item. Shirts are generally $3.75, pants $5.00. Unlike Salvation Army, Goodwill has dressing rooms, a good selection, and a semblance of order. Goodwills are great places to shop for fun and cheap items.
Finally, if you need something to really make the outfit pop, and are willing to spend a bit more money, you can always check out one (or both!) of these wig shops...
1.) Wigs Plus: Located in a large shopping center at the corner of Market Street and Spring Garden (the address is 4645 W. Market Street, Suite C) this store specializes in all kinds of high quality wigs. These are not your cheap Halloween store wigs, either. They are expensive, but will look great. They have a large selection and it's fun to try on a bunch of different wigs.
2.) Wigs, Hats, Accessories: Found at 2224 Golden Gate Drive, this shop is another that specializes in wigs and other head coverings. They say they have the largest selection of wigs in all of North Carolina, and sell wigs made of various different things, such as human hair, cuticle hair, and synthetic materials.
So check out these local places; get out there and start shopping for your Halloween costume today! 2224 Golden Gate Dr2224
