Places to Volunteer in Omaha, Nebraska

Stephanie Espiritu
Whether it is schools, shelters, food banks, or senior centers there are always opportunities to volunteer. Not only will others benefit from your time; you will too.

So where do you go; where are those opportunities to volunteer in Nebraska? I've compiled a list of them in Omaha and the surrounding areas.

1. Senior Centers are located throughout the Omaha area. In Papillion you can give your time by volunteering at the "Papillion Senior Center" located at 1001 Limerick Road. They always have activities going on and because of that they are always in need of help. Things like games, arts and crafts, and music classes are just some of the activities that the seniors take part in. For more information contact Laura Jean at 402-597-2059. In addition to the "Papillion Senior Center" you can also volunteer at the "La Vista Senior Center" which can be reached by calling 402-331-3455. The center is located at 8116 Park View Blvd. in La Vista. Seniors meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for lunch and the center also has activities to participate in.

2. "The American Lung Association" needs volunteers to promote smoke free environments in Omaha and the surrounding areas. They are located at 8990 West Dodge Road and can be reached at 402-444-5526 or visit them on line at www.smokefreeomaha.org.

3. If you have a heart to care for Omaha's elderly community you can do so by volunteering at "ENOA; Eastern Nebraska Office of Aging." You will help seniors to live more independently so they can remain in their home instead of being moved to a nursing home facility. The "ENOA" is located at 4223 Center Street in Omaha; please contact Karen Kelly at 402-444-6444 for more information or on line at www.enoa.org.

4. "The Micah House" is an emergency center for those that become or are homeless. It is a safe environment that cares about making a difference by helping those in crisis. "The Micah House" is located close to Omaha in the Council Bluffs area. For volunteer opportunities call 712-322-6002 or on line at www.themicahhouse.org.

5. For those interested in working with the younger generation you can either volunteer at a local school or contact "Camp Fire USA." This organization provides emotional, educational, and physical support to youth that may otherwise end up living a life of crime. For more information about this organization visit them on the web at www.campfireomaha.org.

6. "The United Way of the Midlands" is in need of volunteers to distribute food in the afternoon from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. They can be reached at 402-444-6666; for additional opportunities to volunteer go to http://65.166.193.134/IFTWSQL4/uwml/public.aspx.

These are only 6 organizations that are in need of help; give of your time and you will make a difference in someone's life.
