Amazon.com
It comes as no surprise that at #2 in regards to sales and traffic is Amazon.com. Originally designed as a strict place to buy and sell media like books and dvds, Amazon has expanded exponentially into a much broader range of items. EBay opened its sister site Half.com in an effort to compete with Amazon in regards to strict media sales and trade, and in return it seems that Amazon has expanded into eBay territory. There are rumors that eBay will be looking to buy out amazon.com in a effort to stifle competition, but if Amazon can hold out and concurrently create it's own style of secure finance such as Paypal, then keep an eye out for this always competitive media giant.
Craigslist.com
One could easily argue that craigslist on a local level is just as popular as eBay. The difference lays in two simple yet incredibly important oversights. The first is the fact that craigslist.com is free for the most part to list, however, in return the buyer is swarmed with spammers and scammers. The security is simply not there, if craigslist were to make a true account member program for its sellers and buyers in which warning signs can be seen, then it would be a true competitor. The second is that craigslist.com has no means of security or shipping nationally, it is strictly local, if it were to create a shipping system while holding on to the local home town feel, then it would be a force to be reckoned with. Be on the look out for these changes.
Bonanzle.com
This is the fastest growing site for online trade as far as member growth. The business plan is unique in that there are no fees to list anything at all. You create a shop essentially where buyers can browse your merchandise, and with final fees for a sale actually cheaper than eBay, look for this site to explode in the near future.
Ioffer.com
Also a free site to list items, Ioffer works more like a flea market. You are expected to be open to offers and should price your items accordingly. The final fees are similar to ebay but with the lack of listing fees, the business model is better for the consumer, All that is needed is to steal some traffic form eBay, and you have a full fledged true online flea market without the house picking your pocket at every turn.
EBay is on top as far as online trade for the time being, but with every great rise to power comes a great fall. If history has taught us anything, it is that this should be law. Look out for these contenders as we can all expect to see more of them in the near future.
