Plan 9 from Outer Space Airing on Turner Classic Movies October 13

Timothy Sexton
On October 13 - Friday the 13th - Turner Classic Movies will be showing a terrific double feature that should not be missed. Two Ed Wood movies prominently featured in Tim Burton's brilliant biopic (containing Johnny Depp's best performance) will be aired. Bride of the Monster contains that bizarre scene recreated in Burton's movie where the two women bump into each outside an office. But the real gem, of course, is a rare nationally televised airing of what has been called the worst movie ever made: Plan 9 From Outer Space.

What makes Plan 9 so spectacularly infamous is that it was advertised as Bela Lugosi's last film despite the fact that the footage of Lugosi in the movie was actually filmed before the script was even written. And then, of course, there's also the fact that the Lugosi character in the movie was played by a chiropodist since Lugosi had died well before filming actually started.

Plan 9 is most certainly not the worst movie ever made. Face/Off, for instance, doesn't contain a single frame that is nearly as interesting, and I defy anyone to fall asleep during this movie as I did during all three Lord of the Rings snorefests. It's also a lot more fun to watch than most of today's special effects and car crash extravaganza. And, since it is a supernatural horror film, I guarantee you will be scared more often than you were during the The Grudge.

Plan 9 From Outer Space airs at 2:00 AM Eastern time on Turner Classic Movies on Friday, Oct. 13.

Trivia: Fox Mulder, of The X-Files, claimed to have watched Plan 9 From Outer Space 42 times.

Sorry to be cliche, but MANOS the Hands of Fate is the worst movie ever. The only movie the people on MST3K apologized for showing. That and the 2004 version of Around the World in 80 days, which made me fall asleep 6 times.

I will respectfully disagree Tim...Plan 9 is the worse movie ever made...It and Batman Returns. However, I think everyone should suffer through it at least once to make their own decisions. And, Turner should be encouraged to show more movies that actually have and deserve a place in film history.
