Planet Fitness Gym Membership: At $10 a Month, it Doesn't Get Much Better

Robin Neorr
When Planet Fitness came to the neighborhood, it let everyone know it with its now-infamous postcards offering a gym membership for only $10 a month. I was pretty suspicious. I mean, with a membership rate that low, what kind of equipment do they have?

I just canceled my other gym membership ($60 a month) because I didn't go enough to justify the cost. I needed to go somewhere and decided that at $10 a month, if I only went once a week, it was worth it to join Planet Fitness.

I signed up, and the beauty of Planet Fitness, aside from the free tootsie rolls, is that it is a month-to-month contract. There was no three-year membership required, which in my mind is comforting, because if I don't like it, I can leave.

There was a $49 sign-up fee which they occasionally waive. I was not privy enough to this fact so I did pay it. They also have an upgraded membership that allows use of their tanning beds and massage chairs for $19 a month, but I don't tan and I have a husband to cover the massage portion so I passed. You also walk away with a styling T-shirt and a free purple pen when you sign up. Bonus!

The equipment was plentiful. They had at least sixty treadmills and twenty stationary bikes. They had ten elliptical machines. There weight lifting section had all of the basics. They offered dumbbells and machines.

Planet Fitness offers free personal training. It's more like you and three other people with a trainer as he tells you what the machine does, but for free it is worth it. You can't ask for one one one training when you are paying a dollar a visit now can you.

They proudly announce that it is a no frills gym. It is a no judgment zone and no meat-heads will be there mocking your lack of gym prowess. They were right for the most part. I always felt comfortable. I never worried that anyone was judging me or questioning why I was in "their" gym.

Planet Fitness also offers a twenty minute workout which is great for the busy professional to squeeze in on her lunch hour. You alternate between one minute of cardio and one minute of strength training. I only used this workout once, but seeing as gyms such as CURVES charge three times as much for this program I can see it's benefits.

The only issue I ran into was a problem with the scales. Not that I am a slave to the scale, but a girl likes to weigh herself to see how all the working out is going. The scales were constantly out of order and eventually they were gone from the gym never to be returned. I questioned a staff member about this and she said the maintenance fee on the scale was just to high to justify keeping it there. Wow, that was a new one a gym that couldn't afford to have a scale.

I found the gym clean at all times. I was happy with the equipment, unhappy with the scale and honestly do like a little more bells and whistles such as a swimming pool and cardio classes at my gym, but for a limited budget Planet Fitness is great.

So many complaints... and it's all stuff you could've figured out by taking a tour of the gym before signing up. No scale like oh em gee... weigh yourself at home or go to Target & weigh yourself in an aisle. BOO HOO no dumbbells over 80 lbs.. didn't you realize this when you signed up?? I swear people expect the world for 10 dollars a month.

My advice to you is to not join a gym without taking a tour? Don't commit yourself to something if you haven't done your research. Boo hoo no scale, get over it..wow.

Planet fitness gets ahold of your credit card number and has small print that will cost you way more than 60.00 per month!!!!! My friend had to change her credit card number to get it to stop coz supposedly they have small print that they don't tell you about.
Do not join!!! They are very rude when you find their charges also.

I have been going to the Planet Fitness in Weymouth, MA for several years and have been very happy with the facility. It is always clean and well maintained and has a lot of great cardio and strength equipment, which they are always updating and which is well maintained.

My wife and myself are on the same membership. She is the primary member, I am the guest. I can't go w/o her ,and she rarely wants to go. I want to separate our memberships, but planetfitness wants to stick me w/another initiation fee after faithfully paying them on time for a year.

Ok, first off. Why is it that if you can lift weights that are heavy it automatically makes you a "meathead"? Seriously? Why can't they just cut members who judge other people? I go to a PF and it sucks. Unfortunately I've got no other options because PF is close and is in my town. Theres no dumbbells over 75 lbs, no squat rack, no free weights except the dumbbells and the curling bars that go to 60 lbs, no special equipment beyond the cable stuff and four friggin smith machines which have no place in a gym. All that planet fatness does is hinders progress. If your in a gym "judging" people you have way to much time on your hands. I am not a body builder or a powerlifter but I believe that if your at a gym there are certain tools you should have access to. Planet fatness opens a gym in a town and they are offering this great deal of ten bucks a month, well the competing gyms are all more expensive and crowded so people leave to go to PF. Power lifters and body builders are left to the
