First thing that we must consider is either to buy a brand new car or a second-hand car. We must consider our budget. We just have to be realistic and weigh the pros and cons when you buy either one. For brand new cars, you'd usually shell out more money. The good thing is that you don't have to worry about maintenance. The car has its warranty and you are sure that your car is in tip top condition.
As for second-hand cars, the most appealing part of it is the price. You will definitely save a lot of money if you purchase a second-hand car but the main problem is that you're taking a major risk since you don't really know how the car was handled by its previous owner. It might have hidden problems and I now tell you that it's extremely difficult to know every possible hidden problem there is even for an experienced mechanic. And even if you got the car in good condition, it's likely to cost you more when it comes to maintenance.
Next consideration would be if you like the car. You probably have a few choices of cars that you want to buy. You usually have a make and model in mind when buying your first car. If you have the money for it then I would suggest you go for the car that you really like.
If you buy a car that is cheaper, there is a tendency that you'd get bored quickly and sell it then buy another one since you're not satisfied. It could cost you more in the long run than buying the car that you liked in the first place. This doesn't happen every time but it does happen.
As for my case, I really am fixated on buying a new car. I have a car right now but it has been our family car for years and I want to buy a new one for me and my family. I'm actually rooting for a Toyota Corolla Altis. I considered buying a second-hand car but it doesn't appeal to me that I'd deal with maintenance costs. I am not hasty though so I'm slowly, but surely, saving up so that I could at least pay more than half for the down payment. It's not the car of my dreams, which is a fully-tuned Nissan Skyline GT-R, but it's my ideal car. I love the make, model, the features, mileage per liter, looks and practically everything there is on the Altis.
But then, the decision will always be up to us. If we just need a car to get us from point A to point B, it need not be specific and you can probably save a lot. If you want a specific car then by all means go for it. Sometimes it's not just the car but your achievement that you were able to buy your first car based on your own planning and decision.
