Planning a Dinner Party on a Budget

Hosting a dinner party in your home is a wonderful experience for friends and family to come together in a comfortable setting to enjoy food, conversation, and fun. With careful planning and a budget, it is possible to host a dinner party that everyone will appreciate and remember.

First, decide how many people will be invited and create your invitation list. Think about seating arrangements, plates, silverware, etc. You want everyone to be comfortable so remember it's okay to have a small gathering if that fits the seating that you have available. Or, you can go with something a bit more casual. Once, I had just moved into an apartment and my furniture had not arrived. I wanted to have everyone over so I had a picnic dinner party on the floor. I laid out a large tablecloth and decorated it as if it were a table. We sat on the floor and had finger foods. Everyone loved it.

Next, decide on a budget. Food will be the biggest cost so once you decide how much money is available, you will know what kind of food and beverages you will be able to serve.

Once you have a budget in hand begin think about party themes and your dinner menu. Decide if you want your dinner party to be casual or elegant. Will it be based on a holiday theme? Or maybe a cultural theme? The sky is the limit in possibilities. The important thing is to have your food complement your theme. A possible dinner menu could have an appetizer, soup and salad, the main course, followed by dessert with coffee or tea. Again, tailor this to fit your needs, budget, and theme.

Think about how you will decorate the table for your dinner party. Try to use things in your house to keep the costs down. An elegant glass bowl can be turned into a centerpiece by arranging a few simple items and a candle inside. Do an online search for centerpieces on a budget if you need more ideas. Remember there are many beautiful items in nature such as leaves, branches, and flowers that can used to decorate the table as well. Just add a few candles and it looks elegant.

Now that you have your invitation list, party theme, dinner menu, and ideas to decorate, you are ready to begin the next phase-shopping, cooking and decorating. Remember to relax and have a great time.
