Sleep
The mistake many parents make when their children get out of school is forgetting that their children still need the same amount of sleep. Just because they do not have to get up early to go to school does not mean they don't need sleep. If your children still must get up early, make sure they are still going to bed at a decent hour. If they stay up late, allow them that extra time in the morning or you will have grumpy children on your hands.
Snacks
Make snack time fun for your children this summer. Let them help decide what their snacks are going to be for the week. Children love to make fun snacks out of Jello and fruit. Get them involved and you will find that it will keep them busy for awhile and you can create some wonderful memories with them.
Get Artistic
Spend some time with your children exploring their artistic sides. Get together a large box of art supplies and set up a weekly schedule for you and your children to get creative. You may want to take them to an art museum as inspiration and then let them try to recreate what they have seen. Schedule their art session once a week and they will look forward to it.
Science Day
Young children love to explore and if you create a science day once a week, you will find them eager to learn. You may want to teach your children about how plants grow by having them grow their own vegetable, such as a green bean or you can learn about different animals and then visit a local petting zoo or farm.
Beach
If you want to create some wonderful memories for your children, the beach is where you can do it. Not only will they enjoy the water, they can build sandcastles. You can also combine a beach day with their science day, as well. Choose some books on different things found near the ocean and you and your children can spend some time looking for what they learned about and observing things in their natural environment.
Library
Plan a trip to the library once a week with your children. You may also want to check with your local library for any special children's activities they have planned in the summer. Many will schedule special reading times for younger children. Have you child pick two or three books each week to bring home and read together. Not only will your child enjoy the books, they'll enjoy being read to or reading to you.
Picnic
Plan a special treat for you and your children and take them for a picnic. Get them involved by helping them to prepare the picnic lunch and plan an activity, such as a game or treasure hunt.
These are just a few of the activities you can do with your children when they are out of school for the summer. Look in your local paper for a variety of activities you can do with your children. Many of the best memories are made on those that do not cost a thing but time. Your children are only young once; enjoy the summer with them.
