How large is the space you wish to decorate? Are you decorating a porch area or an entire back yard? How much furniture and how many accessories will you need to fill that space? Decide on the space you will be decorating and what limits you have to follow. Prepare a diagram of the space for planning you layout. If your outdoor space will be on a porch or a deck it will be important to prepare your diagram using the measurements of the space in which you will be working. If your space is an open area such as a yard, measurements are not as important.
What purpose will your outdoor space serve for you? Outdoor spaces serve so many purposes for so many people. Summer brings us all outdoors to enjoy nature and relax, at either play or lounging with a good book or a group of good friends. Take some time to think about what you will use your outdoor space for. If you are planning an area for entertaining, consider the largest group you will have as well as the smallest. Plan gathering areas as well as seating areas for both group sizes. Remember that a small group will feel lost in a widely spread area so plan a smaller, more intimate area for a smaller group to sit as well. Will you be preparing food or bringing it out? If preparing things outdoors, consider all aspects of preparation and include the equipment necessary in your plans. It is easier to do it at this point than to try to fit it in later. If you are catering or bringing food out from an indoor kitchen, you should plan your eating area closer to a doorway to shorten the walk from kitchen to serving area.
What is your budget? It is important to set a budget amount for this project and stick to it. With so many shopping outlets online, it is possible to purchase items direct from the manufacturer saving a great deal. You can also do your shopping at online auction sites such as www.ebay.com as well as sites like WWW.craigslist.com. Thrifty spending opens up new opportunities, so shop around before making a final purchase!
Are you doing the work yourself or will you have friends help? Will you hire the work done professionally? If hiring a professional, this is just as important as any other work you may contract on your home. Make certain that the contractor is reputable. Ask to see credentials as well as references and examples of the work the company has done. Get everything in writing. What you want and what it will cost you. This can eliminate many surprises down the road.
If you will be doing the work yourself, invite a bunch of friends over for a working weekend. Feed them well, and stop working when it gets dark! If you have ample space, set up several tents and build a bonfire. Make it a weekend, but remember that over indulgence will limit the work you are able to do the following day.
What is your time frame? Set a goal and work to finish on time.
