Planning the Perfect Garden Shed

For gardeners who don't have a lot of storage space, the garden shed is essential. It can keep all tools and equipment in one spot and provide a workplace for your gardening activities.

Generally, a garden shed can be any size and style. However, when deciding what you want in style and size, first determine your needs. You'll want your shed to hold all of your gardening equipment, including any power equipment, such as lawn mowers or leaf blowers.

Next, determine what you plan to do in your shed. If you'll be repotting plants, mixing soil, or building anything, you'll want to plan for enough wall and shelf space, as well as empty floor space. At this point, you should be able to figure out how much square footage you will need and sketch out a preliminary floor plan.

Once you have your floor plan, you can now decide upon the style in which you wish to have your shed. This is where you can bring out your creative side. Style it to match your garden, whether formal, rustic, or you can even choose to go with a prefabricated shed. They can be purchased at almost any building supply store. If you're more creative, you may want to do something different. For example, if you have a lot of bird houses in your garden, design it to look like a birdhouse. Choose fun bright colors when painting the outside and you'll always look forward to working inside your shed.

The location of your shed is generally pretty easy to decide. It should be convenient to your garden and near utilities. However, if you are dealing with an unappealing garden shed, you may want to put it in a location that is not easily seen.

Some other things that you may want to consider when planning your shed are adding power and water for convenience, installing a telephone line, and making sure that your shed and supplies are safe by adding locks.
