Planning Your Summer and Fall Vacation in Colorado
Summer Storms in the Colorado Front Range Mountains
Our family moved to the Colorado front range mountains, to a small tourist town, last year after Labor Day. Now a year later, we have spent a full summer in these mountains, and can tell you, plan your trip to the mountains early in the morning and head back to camp in the early afternoon.
Here in the Front Range mountains of Colorado storms come in around 1:00pm, most every afternoon, and can last from an hour, to all night long. Sometimes these storms are very serious, and can even produce a tornado! This year alone we have had three tornados near the Denver area, which is near the Front Range mountains. One of these tornados did considerable damage, killed 1 person, and went up into Wyoming before fizzling out. So the storms in the Colorado mountains can be quite fierce.
Along with lots of thunder and lightning, we also experience hail quite often. It is nothing to have the rain, and hail coming down so hard, that it sounds like someone is throwing buckets of pebbles on the roof of your trailer, and within minutes the ground outside is covered in a sea of white ice.
All this heavy rain tends to cause the water to rush down our road, and causes erosion in the hills, and dirt roads. This happens all over up in the mountains, and can cause flash floods, and land slides, they only last for a short bit, but they can still be dangerous just the same.
This article is not meant to discourage you from visiting the Colorado Front Range mountains, in fact we encourage you to come visit, you will absolutely LOVE it here, but you need to know about the Summer storms in the Colorado Front Range mountains, because if you go unprepared, you may get trapped in the woods during a storm while hiking, or have your visit to one of Colorado's fine attractions ruined by the afternoon storms.
You can avoid an unpleasant afternoon outdoors, by simply planning your outdoor activities starting in the early morning, and ending in the early afternoon. There are lots of indoor activities to be enjoyed in the Colorado Front Range mountains too. Just plan them for the afternoon's, and your sure to have a wonderful stay in Colorado!
