Planning Sweet 16, Swag 16 Parties

DJ Voltron
Sweet 16 Parties are a special event. Some clients prefer a formal event like a wedding reception. Others prefer something casual like a house party.

Normally the music theme will be Top 40 radio hits, hip-hop and pop. If you plan to provide your own music, go to iTunes and purchase at least the top 20 current hits that will fit the genre of the party. Artists like Britney Spears, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Chris Brown and Fergie are popular.

Here are some suggestions for sweet 16 party.

Chocolate Fountain

Non-Alcoholic daiquiris

Special Entrance for the person turning 16.

Strobe Light Party (Keep the room dark)

Blacklight Party (Have everyone wear white)

Performances (Step Show, Hype Man, Dance Group)

Game Show (Audience Participation and Prizes)

Dance Contest (Get Low Contest, Apache Dance Contest)

Swag Musical Chairs (Musical Chairs with Swag Theme)

Karaoke Contest (Popular Songs)

Slumber Party

About a month before the party, start sending out invitations. You can also create a MySpace event online and Evite to send emails to the computer savvy attendees.

Try to avoid inviting individuals that are prone to cause a disturbance or disruption during the party. You should plan to have a few parents to help with the party and to supervise the teens to make sure none of the dancing gets out of hand. Some clients prefer to have a friend coordinate the party; others will have the DJ/MC do it. A few good places to have the event can be a House, Community Center, Hall/Venue or Hotel Ballroom. You can choose to hold the event in the late afternoon as opposed to evening to save money if you will be hosting it outside of your own home. Here is a sample itinerary of a planned sweet 16 party:

4:00 - Arrival of guest (DJ choice of music)

4:30 - Prayer

4:45 - Birthday Entrance (Requested Mix)

5:00 - Dance Group performance

5:15 - Dinner (DJ choice of music)

6:00 - Dedication

6:15 - Slide Show Presentation

6:30 - Step Team Performance

7:00 - Dancing

Some great ideas are to hire a professional photographer or balloon specialist to make the event extra special. As an alternative, you can purchase a few disposable cameras to put on tables, and inform everyone to use them to take pictures of the event and turn them in at the end of the event. Have a keepsake such as a writing board so that everyone can write their wishes to the teen turning 16.

Keep a folder of all the pictures from everyone. Send the pictures out by mail or email to distant relatives.
