Planning Tips for Freelance Writers

Even the Self Employed Need to Plan

Laurie Childree
When you go to work you have your day planned out. Freelance writers must also plan their day. The problem is that today most freelance writers are at home making planning the day a little tricky. So how do you plan a work day around family and home life? There are few things that can be done to make the work day go by easier.

Appointment Book/Desk Calendar

Writers even those that stay home need a calendar for their desk and an appointment book. Having somewhere to keep track of appointments whether for yourself or your family will help you a great deal. Knowing when you have to be somewhere else will allow you to see when you can't be writing, bidding or promoting. Once you know this you can schedule the rest of the day around it.

To Do List

Writers need "to do list" just like everyone else. They can be made the night before for the next day or at the end of the week for the following week. The more detailed the list the more time it'll take to make but the less time you'll spend figuring out what you have to do. Separate lists for work and home will help to keep the day organized.

The Night Before

Planning the next day can and should start the night before. When you take a moment to put out everything that you're going to need to start your day it'll make staying on track easier. Freelance writers are often not making any money when they aren't producing; the more time they have to look for what they need the less money they make.

Don't Neglect Yourself

With all the focus on work a freelance writer can forget to take care of themselves sometimes. All the planning, scheduling and organizing doesn't do any good if you're too tired or sick to work. Starting the day by going straight to work isn't always a good thing. Taking a few minutes in the morning to drink your coffee, eat breakfast or just visit with the family can help you to relax and focus on what you're going to do during the day.

Sleep

When planning your day as a freelance writer you want to include sleep. Writers have to think to write, a lack of sleep can make you foggy dragging the quality of your work down. You will find that you are more productive during the day if you are rested. Forcing yourself to stay up all night and continue through the next day can lead to careless mistakes.
The methods that freelance writers use to plan their day will vary. The most important thing when planning the work day is to keep the amount you set as your earning goal for the day in mind. An appointment book and desk calendar can be a writer's best friend when it comes to working around family outings and household responsibilities.
