Planning for the Upcoming Homeschool Year

I'm usually thinking about the next school year before the current one is over. That is because in the past I have procrastinated and then not been adequately prepared for the upcoming year. To make sure that doesn't happen again, I make sure that I am all set for the upcoming year before summer vacation is over.

Use What You Have
I take stock of what materials I already have on hand. I use nonconsumable textbooks so that they can be passed on to the next child. So I look in my school closet and see what books I already own. Then I write down what books I need.

I do the same thing with school supplies. If I have an overabundance of something then I don't buy more. When I first began homeschooling I would buy so much glue that it would dry out before it was all used up. Now, I try to just buy what's needed and maybe a little extra in case I underestimate.

Find Free Resources
Once I find out what I need, I try to see if I can get it for free. I don't mind paying for homeschool materials. But there are so many free resources available to homeschoolers that I have been able to homeschool the elementary grades for free. I do not need to purchase textbooks until middle school.

The two main free sources that I use are the public library and the internet. It does take a lot more planning than purchasing a curriculum. But I am able to customize my children's education in an economical manner.

Make a Planner
Once I know what books I will be using for school, I make a planner. We homeschool for 36 weeks. So, I try to divide all of our lessons evenly over that time period. I also add 10 extra days onto the end of the planner to allow for make up days.

I have 3 small children that are very close in age. So I teach most of their subjects together. I also have a middle school student. So I have one planner for the younger children and one for my older.

Buying School Supplies
Lastly, I purchase school supplies when they are on sale. I do not like the last minute crowds during "back to school" time. So, I usually go to Walmart very early on a weekday morning and do my shopping.

By planning ahead, I have been able to make sure that the school year starts smoothly and on time.
