What I found on plantanswers.com was a virtual "treasure trove of information and answers to all the questions I might have regarding not only my tree damage, but other plants as well. You see, I had a tree that had grown wild in a V shape in my back yard, and summer storms caused the tree to split on one side exposing the rotted wood within.
Sadly enough, I found onsite that once decay attacks a tree there is little one can do to save the tree. It seems, according to the site, that when the rot is evident to the homeowner, it usually has spread so far inside the tree that treatment is useless and there may be only one option left.
Some advocate cutting off the decaying branch before rot spreads and I can see where that might be a wise choice in some instances but when it came to our tree, the base of the tree was filled with black rot, and clearly cannot be saved. I even doubt that the other side of this "V" shaped tree can be saved either for it is closely connected to the side that fell.
At this time, we have a call into a tree company who are coming to see if the other side of this tree can be saved or whether it should be cut down before it falls down. I suspect the later will be the case, and though I am somewhat saddened by the thought of losing this tree that both of my boys have played on and around for so long, I realize that if it is diseased, it must come down before it does more damage than the other half did when it fell.
If you too are interested in finding out more on rot within a tree, some of the warning signs and what "experts" have to say about treatment and possible removal, I would suggest you visit plantanswers.com and see for yourself how decay begins and how it ultimately must end as well. It's an interesting site with easy to understand lingo and great information about all sorts of plants. Check it out for yourself and see why this site really DOES have all the answers about plants

Post a CommentI answered your question but I didn't sign in as Susanbut rather as " Susan guest" as I was running late. I spoke to some old order Amish about your problem as well and they told me to tell you that things will be better next year. This past winter did a lot of odd things to plants and killed well established trees, bushes and trees that ordinarily have done fine, They said to leave them and say a few prayers and give them a light coating of straw this winter to protectthem~
I had question yeaterday about Hibiscus buds falling off these are plants i planted this spring they have already blumed this year but all the sudden the buds almost open you can see the color then the stem turns lite green and the bud falls off please help
if you had a bad winter like we did with ice and colder than normal temps you can blame that. I lost lambs ear which you can't kill unless you poison it. Also....have you had an unusually odd spring? warm and then cool etc with colder than normal nights? That will toss a lot of the more fragile plants into shock. Bad news, no flowers this year but good news, you'll have them back next year. Try putting a layer of leaves over them in the fall. It warms them and as it decomposes, also warms the soil.
I have Golden Sunrise Hibiscus on east side of house been very sucessful in past but the buds almost open and stem turn a lighter shade of green and the buds fall off had a couple open but the rest are falling off/have blue plumbago there to and they are doing great please help
We have pony-tail palm in a large container on our deck, now over 10 yrs old and we have successfully protected it from freeze damage until this jan. The plant has two major bulb-like parts; the smaller of the two has survived but larger lost all of it's foliage leaving a bare stalk. I was about to cut the remaining stalk but today noticed a tiny spring of green; is there hope or should I give up and cut the stalk?
