Plant Gene Mini, Automatic Plant Watering System

A Product Review

Karen Gros
The Plant Gene entered the market a couple of years ago and was an instant hit with hobby gardeners, housewives and for those of us who work a 40 hour week outside the home.

The Plant Gene Mini is the same product as the full size product and waters houseplants for you that are smaller in size than what would require the full size version of the Plant Gene.

The Plant Gene Mini is about 6 inches in height and comes in various colors. The Plant Gene is made of real glass so you should be careful in handling it in order as to not break it.

The Plant Gene Mini is designed to water smaller houseplants, potted plants outdoors or hanging baskets. The globe portion of the Plant Gene Mini is about the size of a regular Christmas tree ornament and has a small tube coming out of it that secures the Plant Gene into the soil and delivers the water to the root systems.

The Plant Gene is a wonderful product that instantly waters your plants for you. It is great for people who forget to water plants or for those that just do not have enough time in the day to do all the chores. I fall into the latter category as after working a full day and having an hour and half drive home, there is little time left for household chores such as watering plants---that is if I even remember that the plants need watering!

The Plant Gene is easy to use. You will remove it from the box it came in, turn upside down and run water into the Plant Gene from under a running faucet. Decide where you will place the Plant Gene in the container holding your plant and make a deep hole. You will want to make the hole before sticking the Plant Gene into the soil because this method will clog the opening of the tube on the Plant Gene with soil and leave it unable to deliver the water to your plant. Next you will turn the Plant Gene upside down and place it in the hole in your plant's container. Your plant is now set for automatic watering!

The Plant Gene is really a neat invention. The mini size is perfect for smaller plants in 3 to 6 inch containers. It would probably work in a container up to 8 or 10 inches.

I have been using the Plant Gene Mini for a couple of months now. I have mine placed in a pot containing a Poinsettia that is in a 6 to 8 inch pot. The Plant Gene Mini does a great job of watering the plant for me during the week and I fill the contraption back up on the weekends and it is all set to do its job of watering for me for another week.

The Plant Gene Mini retails for around $3.00 to $5.00, as where the original size costs around $10.00 for a set of two or $12.99 for a set of three. The price seems to be coming down some on these in recent months and they are easier to find. Do I think they are worth it? Yes, especially if you are busy or not at home at lot. I love my Plant Gene and rely on it to keep my Poinsettia watered and looking good. This is the longest I have managed to keep a Poinsettia alive. This one is from last holiday season and appears to be going to make it for the next upcoming Christmas season. It only has about two months to go!
I do recommend the Plant Gene Mini for anyone that needs help or reminders to water their plants. I do not have a regular size Plant Gene, but my mother and mother in law do. They both love the full size product as much as I like
