Also known as the Weymouth pine, the Eastern white pine is native to the United States. It is from the pine family of plants and is botanically known as Pinus strobus.
Eastern White Pine Description
Growing 75 to 100 feet high, this pine has horizontal branches that are tiered. Needles are in feather-like clusters, blue-green to light green in color. There are only five needles to a tuft, on the ends of the twigs. They have large cones, a straight trunk, with a row of branches added each year.
Growing Guide
This perennial tree isn't picky about lighting conditions - growing in full sun to full shade conditions. Soils should be moist, acidic, and well-drained. Propagate by seed that have had two months of stratification. It will take years before their is any fast growth in the seedlings.
Distribution
This native is found in the states of Arkansas, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. It is seen in stream banks and upland sites.
Uses
The plant is both a shelter and a food source for birds and mammals. It has wood that is used for cabinets, carvings, furniture, and other construction.
