The seep muhly, botanically known as Muhlenbergia reverchonii, is from the grass family of plants. It is native to the United States.

Seep Muhly Description

Growing one to three-and-a-half feet high, this grass has slender stems and dense tufts of foliage. There is a curly mass at the plant's base. There is a delicate seed head. The seed head is purplish and branching. Seep muhly has a fibrous root system and a panicle inflorescence. This inflorescence can be white, pink, or brown and arises from August through November. With age, this plant has a nice batch of curly bunches of leaves at its base.

Growing Guide

Seep muhly prefers to grow in full sun and in alkaline soil. It is drought, cold, and heat tolerant. Propagate by seed that is collected in November.

This native is found in the states of Texas and Oklahoma. It is seen in limestone slopes and caliche prairies.

Plant Genus

The Muhlenbergia genus is named for Heinrich Ludwig Muehlenberg, a minister and first president of Franklin College. He was a chemist, botanist, and a minerologist. He named 150 species in Index Flora Lancastriensis, his 1795 work.
