The best place to look for a live tree is your local garden center or nursery. They will carry a wide variety of trees and you will be able to choose exactly the tree you want for your yard. They will be small compared to cut or artificial Christmas trees, but they will grow in your yard, and you will be able to enjoy them year after year. Make sure you find out about the necessary growing conditions and how tall they will grow before selecting a tree, and make sure to ask the grower about care instructions until you plant it. Then take it home and decorate it as you would any other Christmas tree, and plant it when the holiday season is over.
If you are unable to find a garden center or nursery open during the holiday season, or you cannot find an acceptable Christmas tree there, try Jackson and Perkins. Jackson and Perkins online store is a fantastic choice for a living Christmas tree. They offer certain holiday trees which are already decorated with ornaments and even lights. All you have to do is plug in the tree if lights are included, water it, and plant it after the holidays. This year, they are offering more live Christmas trees than ever before. All of their live trees also come in a lovely pot that can be reused after you plant the tree on Christmas day. Some of the most interesting Christmas trees they offer are not actual trees at all. They offer a Rosemary plant that is shaped like a Christmas tree. This too can be planted and enjoyed after the holiday season. They list an Amaryllis plant among the live trees, but it is a faux tree, and should not be mistaken for a live plant. They offer decorated Pine, Spruce, and Topiary trees. Jackson and Perkins is well known for their plants, and every one comes with a guarantee. They only ship healthy plants, and out of the numerous times I've had plants shipped as a gift, they have arrived in excellent condition and thrived for a long time to come.
For those who think this idea will not work for them because they want to put their presents under a Christmas tree, consider buying an artificial Christmas tree that you can put presents under. Then decorate both. One can be trimmed traditionally with ribbons and bells. The other Christmas tree can be decorated in whatever unusual manner you choose. No matter how you adopt this holiday tradition into your family, a living tree is a great tradition to have. It's good for the environment, your property value, and your family.
