Plants to Grow in Deer Country: Suggestions Based on Personal Experience

I live in the mountains of Pennsylvania and I know all to well about the plants that should be planted and ones that should not be planted around our nightly visitors "deer". The first year in our house I wanted to plant flowers in an island type look in the front yard. I purchased all types of flowers and plants only to find them being eaten away slowly every night. Before a week went by the only plants that were left in my flower bed was the Shasta Daisies that I planted.

I learned the hard way and was a very expensive lesson to learn. Although some of the plants I planted would grow back, since they were bulbs which was left in tack, I knew that they needed moved and planted in a different area away from deer. I carefully transplanted the plants in my mothers flower beds since she lives in town far enough away from the woods so she is less likely to get deer in her yard and flower beds.

I did a lot of research and made a list of all the flowers and plants that get along well with deer. I have found that only poisonous plants are considered wholly deer-proof. The following list of plants is for the most part deer proof since the deer are more likely to eat other available food but lack of food for the deer may cause the deer to eat more undesirable choices such as some of the flowers and plants that are listed. Primarily deer would leave these plants behind for the taste of other foods that are available to the furry friends.

The following list is a wide variety of plants that would add a beautiful touch to any landscaping. I have planted at least half of these plants in my yard which is located in the middle of deer country and I am very pleased with the results of each and every one of them:

Pine, Spruce, Fir, Big Leaf Maple, Strawberry Trees, Cedar, Rock cress, Redbud, Jasmine, Magnolia, Tree peony, Fern, Rhododendron, Rosemary, Lilac, Shasta Daisy, Marigold, Zinnia, Sunflower, Bleeding heart, Tulip, Blanket Flower, Oriental poppy, Snowflake, Narcissus daffodil, Satin flower, Monkey flower, Rhubarb, Gloriosa daisy, Red elderberry, Caryopteris, Tanacetum,

Ornamental Grass, Allium and Buddleia davidii.

The above lists a wide variety of bulbs, trees, plants and shrubs to plant in your flower gardens. Just mix and match different plants, bulbs and etc, which will keep your flower garden looking beautiful all year with great colors and styles.

Before you purchase plants and flowers be sure to look at this guide. Buying flowers that you're not sure of my only end in you losing your money and hard work the way I did.
