Plants for Indoor Decoration During the Winter

Bill Smith
As summer winds down you might be thinking to yourself how boring your house is going to be now. With the flowers outside slowly dying, some people might forget that you can dress up the inside of your house with plants and flowers that thrive just as good inside during the winter as plants that thrive in the outside during summer. If you want to get some plants and flowers for the inside of your house, you might want to look at certain plants that can add beauty to any room of your house, even during the cold winter months.

The Heartleaf Philodendron is a very great plant to keep indoors during the winter months to help spruce up your house. These plants should be kept on elevated spots and ledges due to the long stems and green leaves. You can keep this plant on an elevated surface and watch the stems and green leaves flow down and it can dress up any room and make it more summer-like. This plant should be kept in a lower-light area of your house, so it would work well in a north or east facing window. You should not let the soil get soaked, and the soil should be allowed to dry a little bit in between each watering. You do not want the soil dry completely but drowning it will do more harm than good, so check it every few days to see if it needs watering. This plant is very pretty and can dress up the fireplace mantle, making it a great choice for the holiday decorations and the great thing about the plant is that you can trim it whenever you want to get the right look for your room.

Another great plant for the indoors this winter season would be Calamondin, which is best in light-filled corners. The Calamondin plant is like a small fruit tree, which will produce fruit year around so it should get plenty of sun. The fruit that comes from the Calamondin plant tastes like a kumquat and a mandarin orange, and can be used in recipes that call for lemons. Having a small fruit tree in your house, in a sunny area will make your home feel more like summer and will also provide a wonderful aroma and just looks very beautiful. During the spring and summer months you should keep this plant watered lightly, making sure you do not over-water the plant. Although light watering routines are important for this plant, the main thing to do while having this plant in the house during the winter is to make sure it has plenty of direct sunlight.

The Spider Plant is a great plant for hanging baskets that you might choose to keep in your home during the winter months. If you want to make a room, especially a kitchen look more like a summer garden then the Spider plant would look really great in the hanging baskets around your room. The Spider plant gets the name because it has long leave which go outwards from a central area where they then develop new growth. The plant then looks like a spider due to the long stems which hang over the basket. The soil should be dry at the top inch before you water this plant during the winter, and the leaves can turn brown due to their sensitivity to tap water. If you notice brown spots or leaves that are turning brown, simply take off the brown areas by trimming it and then switch to distilled water.

The Chinese Evergreen is another great winter plant you can choose to keep your home looking great no matter how cold it is outside. The Chinese Evergreen is best on tables and desks, and you can move it around whenever you want since it does not require much sunlight. You can move this plant wherever you want, depending on what look you want to achieve during the winter. This Chinese Evergreen plant likes to be watered pretty regularly and looks great in any room, and you can even trim it up or let it grow depending on the style of the room. This is a very great plant for the winter because it is just so pretty and also has a very nice aroma to it, not overpowering but also a noticeable clean smell.

The Mother-In-Law's Tongue is another great plant option you can keep in your home this winter. This is a great plant to put in areas of your house that have higher traffic and also will keep standing when people pass by. This plant is great for drafty areas in your home during the winter, so it will help control room temperature and is a plant that can survive on little sunlight. The sunlight does not have to be direct, so you can put this plant in a corner near a window or door that tends to pull in the cold winter air. The soil should be kept lightly watered, without drowning the plant. This plant can also go without water for a short period of time, so if you are going out of town for Christmas or another holiday, you will not have to worry about the plant dying before you get back. This makes a great winter plant because it can help control the drafts in your house which can curb your heating bill, and can also hide imperfections in your house because this plant stands upward and can cover nicks or marks in your paint.
