Plants for Nebraska--Best Nurseries

Best Nurseries for Nebraska Plants

Gwyn Guess
Nebraska has a love affair with plants. Even with its rather dry climate, the urban areas like Omaha are rich with parks, gardens and botanic organizations. The state is loaded with native wildflowers of all kinds, and spring begins showing its head very early in the first of March. These are the times that local botanic centers open their doors for the sale of some of these native plants. But the garden centers have already gotten the first shipments of their container plants, new bulbs and shrubs.

Campbells is one of the most popular nurseries in Lincoln. It's a family-owned and run business that's been in business since its inception over 80 years ago. It has been at the 40th St. address since 1950. The bedding plant green houses produce half a million annuals each year with over 200 varieties. Their other location on 56th St. produces the perennials, trees and shrubs. But it also sells supplies for soil augmentation and garden gifts. They have a newsletter that locals certainly sign up for, but people can click on the Spotlight link to read some of their very informative past articles. These discuss things like shade gardening plants and preparation for the spring garden. Their landscaping company can handle water gardens and features as well as large commercial jobs.

info@mulhalls.com Mulhalls offers exotic and rare plants in addition to a large supply of trees, perennials and shrubs. It was voted Omaha's #1 Garden Center for the past ten years by Omaha Magazine and is the region's largest supplier of nature-related products and services. They have a slogan, "Mulhall's has it all," because they have expanded so much and offer such a range of plants. This nursery began as a small landscaping concern and a lawn maintenance service, but they've come a long way since then. They now grow many of the plants sold on their own 200 acres. And they buy the remainder from the most respected growers in the country. This is a big place. They supply plants that are grown for interior spaces and provide plants that can thrive in many different types of indoor environments. The plants nursery supplies a large range of interesting aquatic plants for water gardeners, displaying them in individual tanks. And, everything from tanks to filters and rocks can be found there too. There are also seminars and classes that people can be signed up for as well. This nursery is definitely a community resource as well as a garden center.

Earl May is another garden center that heavily focuses on landscape design. It is these nurseries that often have the most complete offerings for home gardeners because they generally stock the hardiest or the native plants that will thrive in the Nebraska climate. Earl May is located in Iowa, but they specialize in growing seeds and plants just for the midwest. Their landscaping services are only available for people located within 30 miles of one of their physical garden centers. I have included it because they have so many seed and plant selections ideal to the Nebraska homeowner. Though Nebraska residents can only buy seeds by their online services they have many selections. I would call them and see if there are new centers that are closer. mailuser@earlmay.com Call them at 515-232-2929
