This donation center is a non-profit blood provider, and all blood, plasma, and platelet donations are strictly on a volunteer basis.

What is the difference between plasma donation and blood donation?

Blood donors usually give whole blood. This consists of red blood cells, plasma and platelets. When you donate plasma, the blood goes through a process where the plasma is removed and the rest of the blood is returned to your body through the same needle. Only one arm is used, so your other arm is free for turning the pages of a book or using your laptop.

Why should I donate plasma rather than blood?

Platelets have a shelf life of 8-12 days. Red blood cells can be stored up to 42 days. Frozen plasma can be kept up to 12 months.

Using a process called pheresis, greater quantities of plasma can be collected than in a whole blood donation.

Plasma can be donated once or twice a month, but whole blood can only be donated 3 times a year.

Who benefits from blood plasma transfusions?

Plasma is the liquid part of the blood that contains critical clotting properties. It can be transfused to help premature infants and organ transplant recipients, who usually need about 25 units of plasma. Plasma is used in the treatment of bleeding, clotting problems and trauma. It's also used for plasma exchanges.

How much time will this take?

The first visit will take about 2 1/2 hours. You'll need to bring 2 forms of ID and fill out a questionnaire on your medical history, sex habits, and drug use. You might be able to save time by filling out the questionnaire online. You'll be given a quick physical, have a drop of blood taken from your finger, and have your pulse and temperature taken. Subsequent visits will take less than 90 minutes. A portion of the time is spent having light refreshments after the donation.

How often can I donate plasma?

Plasma can be donated ever 48 hours to once a month, depending on the blood donation center. You can make an appointment for your next donation before you leave. Whole blood can be donated 3 times a year.

Who can donate plasma?

You can donate blood or plasma if you are at least 16 years old, but will need the signature of a parent or guardian. Young adults between 16 - 22 years old must weigh at least 110 pounds.

Men with blood type AB-positive are especially encouraged to donate plasma. AB-positive is the universal plasma type and can be transfused to people of any blood type. Male donors are less likely to carry certain antibodies, which is important for plasma transfusion.

If you have tattoos, but can't prove they were done in a sterile setting, you will be turned away.
