When you donate whole blood your unit is processed into and about 2 tablespoons of platelets can be collected. You would need to donate whole blood 6 times to provide enough platelets for a single patients transfusion. However, with a plasma donation you are providing enough platelets for a single transfusion in one sitting.
Many medical treatments, some lifesaving, need plasma transfusions and treatments. The donations cannot be stored for long periods of time so the need for continues donations is great. Just about any adult can be a plasma donor. A health screening is provided for each donor before their first donation session.
This procedure is safe and closely supervised. Everything used is sterile and the platelets taken from your blood will be replaced by your body within 72 hours. The process takes anywhere from an hour to two hours and some companies pay for your donations.
