Plasma televisions use plasma cells to light up the screen and create a picture while LCD (liquid crystal display) use liquid crystal and the picture is created by applying a different amount of charge to the crystals for an overall effect of a picture.
There are reasons plasma televisions are better than LCD and LCD better than plasma. Here is why each one is better than the other (is that even possible?).
Plasma Televisions vs. LCD - Why Plasma is Better
If you are going to be watching movies, a Plasma television is a better choice because it has the ability to display different shades of dark colors (contrast and detail for dark colors) better than LCD.
If you were to look at a plasma television from certain angles it will look the same in terms of the brightness and colors on the screen while LCDs tend to show different shades of colors and higher or lower brightness depending on the angle.
The price of a very large screen plasma television tends to be cheaper than that of LCD televisions.
Plasma televisions have less blur with high frame rates than do LCD televisions.
Plasma Televisions vs. LCD - Why LCD is Better
The screen resolution (number of available pixels on the whole screen) of an LCD is usually better as opposed to plasma televisions.
LCD televisions require less power to run than does a Plasma television.
LCD prices are getting cheaper as recent trends show.
If the size of the television doesn't matter or if you are looking for a smaller television, then LCD offers better resolution which means more detailed pictures on smaller screens than a plasma television.
Plasma televisions tend to be heavier than LCD televisions.
Plasma televisions can have glare depending on the lighting and the angle of viewing, while LCD televisions don't have as much glare.
In the end, both plasma televisions vs. LCD televisions are capable of displaying very high quality pictures. I tend to watch movies a lot so personally I would probably choose plasma because of the different contrasts of dark colors that it can show that the LCD can't show as well. I also tend to play video games a lot, for which I might consider getting an LCD because plasmas can have temporary burn-ins of a picture that is on screen for a long time.
