Platonic, Romantic Love Complicates on 'Secret Life of the American Teenager'

'Friends to Lovers Forever, Lovers to Friends Never'

This week on "Secret Life of the American Teenager," Ricky (Daren Kagasoff) toyed with the idea of proposing to Amy (Shailene Woodley) while ex-couples dealt with the aftermath of their relationship.

Henry/Alice

The show's lone stable couple hit some rough patches this week when Henry told Alice that he wanted for them to attend separate colleges. Because they had been together since third grade, he wanted to have experiences after high school. Although they would not be graduating for another year, Alice took Henry's post-graduation plans as a sign that he didn't want to be with her.

As Ben (Kenny Baumann) commiserated with Henry, he pointed out that they were friends before they were lovers. Henry quoted his mother as saying, "friends before lovers forever, lovers to friends never." This seemed to be an underlying theme for the show's current ex-couples.

Madison/Jack/Grace

Jack seems unable to salvage friendships with either Grace (Megan Park) or Madison. He admitted that he was still in love with Grace, but his hands were tied because she was dating Daniel. Instead, he asked recent ex-girlfriend Madison to be his platonic date for senior functions.

Although she knew full well that she was Jack's second choice, she agreed to the plan because Lauren and Amy both had dates. Lauren changed Madison's mind by pointing out that accepting Jack's invitation showed a lack of self-esteem. Once Madison turned him down, Jack asked Grace and Daniel to be his co-dates. Surely a good-looking guy like Jack could find someone new?

Ricky/Adrian

Although Adrian (Francia Raisa) seems to be currently occupied with Dante, it doesn't stop her from the occasional flirtatious bump with her ex, Ricky. Given that she has openly stated her intention to break him and Amy up, I don't see these two becoming platonic friends anytime soon.

George/Anne

Although George and Anne (Molly Ringwald) had a relatively amicable divorce, Anne continues to be frustrated by George's "immaturity." He even used Ricky's (lesbian) mother in an attempt to make Anne jealous. Yet somehow his ineffectually clueless behavior renders him harmless and even a bit endearing.

Ricky/Amy

Ricky and Amy seem to be the only ones going strong these days (as even Daniel has grown weary of Grace's social drama). Amy has been trying to milk Ricky for a proposal, awkwardly combining samurai movies with Chinese food and showing that she can be "crazy" by giving him milkshakes and baths. Ricky does intend to propose to her, but he's enjoying the ride for now.

Of course, Bunny reminds Ricky to act quickly. Given that Adrian and Ricky have been accepted to the same school, he may want to take her advice.

"Secret Life of the American Teenager" airs Mondays at 8/7c on ABC Family.
