PLATTERS- Sonny Turner Has that Magic Touch”- Show Reviews- Formally with the PLATTERS, Sonny Turner is Now a Popular Solo Act.- Las Vegas-

Listening to Sonny Turner sing some of the Platters' hits was almost like being there when I first saw Buck Ram's Platters in 1978 and many more times throughout the years. He has captured the whole feeling of the Platter's beautiful love songs! Of course Sonny's group sang "You've Got That Magic Touch", "The Great Pretender", "My Prayer", "Only You", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and "Twilight Time", but there was more! They sang a tribute to Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, and also included other familiar songs- "Harbor Lights" and "Red Sails in the Sunset". When Sonny said, "Let's do some Mowtown music", the mood changed with his renditions of "My Girl" and "Sunshine".

It was a thrilling evening seeing Sonny for the first time. His dynamic personality and golden vocal tones proved Sonny still knows how to sell a song. He kept up a high energy level singing and dancing throughout the show. Sonny's exceptionally talented back up singers worked well together, in perfect harmony.

The show began with a video spotlighting the time Sonny Turner was the lead singer for the Platters in the 60's when the group was riding high on the charts. The footage continued with scenes after Sonny left the Platters, he and many other former Platter's singers were involved in law suites for infringement of the group's name copyright. Sonny finally won the right in court to say "He was the former lead singer of the Platters" because it was true!

The audience was filled with Sonny's fans, people who were enthused and ready to move to the music they loved. Couples held hands and remembered dancing to these songs when they were young. Sonny brought 4 huge picture frame displays filled with the Platters record covers and golden records from the years he appeared with them. Sonny's wonderfully nostalgic show chose music which seems to last forever!

Sonny Turner replaced Tony Williams as the lead singer of the original Platters from 1959 to 1970. His voice stood out from all of the singers who auditioned and at 19, was hired and toured the United States and the world with the Platters. His popularity continued since leaving the Platters, as he brought their music to the public. Sonny received "The Lifetime Excellence in Entertainment" award and was inducted into "The Vocal Group Hall of Fame" for his achievements with The Platters. Sonny's voice was featured in "The Nutty Professor II" starring Eddie Murphy, "Hearts in Atlantis" starring Anthony Hopkins, and "Prince of the City" starring Robert DiNiro.
